This is the aftermath of the war with ISIS in Marawi. What is
the purpose? Innocent civilians die, cities are destroyed,
citizens are displaced, soldiers are traumatized, but ideologies
always live on. They grow, they get stronger, and new members
revive the fight. Lack of education persists, and ignorance
infects a new generation, destined to repeat the same mistakes,
over and over, without any regard for the lessons left by history.
My family struggled to escape from this disease nearly 40
years ago. It persists in Afghanistan, and has spread all over
the world, destroying millions of lives irrespective of their
religion, language, culture, or race. For what? At what price?
Even though we are made to believe it through propaganda, this
isn't about ideology and radicalism. This isn't about
irresponsible militaries and poorly executed counter attacks.
This is about greed, selfish desire, and humans forgetting that
the only thing that actually matters in this world, is one another.
I've traveled to many different places in this world in the past
11 months, carried on the backs of the kind, generous, and
altruistic human beings that I have been led to by the grace and
serendipity of something beyond my control. The only thing I'm
in control of, is the respect I accord them. And the reciprocity
of love I have received every single day is something I will
never be able to pay back even if I lived a thousand lifetimes.
When I see this level of destruction, I am beyond devastated
that these are people I will never meet, never share a laugh
with, never break bread with, and never shake hands with. But
their sacrifice and poor fortune will not go unnoticed. It
motivates me to keep going. I have to. Somebody needs to be
their voice. I'll try my best.

Interview with the self titled Hijabi Troopers. These women, of
whom one is Muslim and lost her home in the conflict, and the
rest Christians, are assigned the role of teaching peace, ethics,
morals, and other education to the kids who have been saved
and evacuated from the conflict in Marawi. Everyday they have
activities such as sing alongs to take the minds of the children
off of the atrocities they just witnessed in their homes. The
Christian women in this group wear hijabs, or head scarves, as
a show of respect for the predominant Muslim city and
community, as dressing modestly is part of the custom and
traditions of Islam. But nobody has forced them to do so, as
many other women working in the area make the choice to
uncover if so desired. The teachings they provide to the kids
are not focused solely on one religion, but rather on humanity
and how to treat everybody equally. Proud of these amazing
women!

Inside Isnilon Hapilon, the emir of ISIS Southeast Asia's house,
in Marawi City, Philippines. The dining table in one of the
pictures is the famous one from the CNN video where he was
planning how to take over the city with other terrorists including
Omar Maute, the head of the Maute terrorist group who also
was killed last week in a firefight with the Armed Forces of
Philippines (AFP). This house is where the war started on May
23, 5 months ago, when the military was tipped off by intel
reports about the planned start of the siege on the following
day, the start of Ramadan, and conducted a preemptive strike.
The terrorist groups had set up snipers and child soldiers, most
between the ages of 12 and 16, at strategic posts throughout
the city including the 3 bridges controlling access to the port
city. They planned to take advantage of the Ramadan month
when food would be in heavy supply and the Muslims in the
city would be fasting. The AFP had removed nearly 10,000
soldiers from the city for unknown reasons in the week leading
up (conspiracy theories about the current government's
involvement are abound), and foreign fighters from Malaysia
and Indonesia had come into the city during the same period
under the guise of the Muslim period of Johor and a
conference. An intricate plan, all hatched for months at this
house belonging to Hapilon's wife and his in laws. She was
killed during this preemptive strike, but he escaped through the
hole in the wall shown in one of the pictures. I was shocked by
the humanity I saw in this house. These people, capable of
such acts of violence, possessed clothes, purses, makeup,
workout machines, awards, pictures, textbooks, bracelets, and
even Superman pillows. And what struck me the most? The
opened, but empty, suitcase on the bed, surrounded by a scene
of devastation, bullet holes, broken glass, piles of clothes,
material possessions, and sense of impending doom. They
were trying to escape, and take as much of their existence with
them. What would make someone, who is living a normal life,
just flip the switch, and decide to give it all up for something
abstract and potentially fatal? What reward is there in that? I
think to solve the problem of terrorism, we can't solve it with
guns, bombs, and airstrikes. Anybody who is willing to go this
far, will not be coerced by force. It will just create
sympathizers, and more passionate fighters in the future. This
is just one house. It makes me wonder what else we don't see
and we don't know? But I do know one thing. War is not the
answer.

President Rodrigo Duterte giving his liberation of Marawi from
ISIS speech on this past Tuesday, October 17th, after the killing
of the ISIS and Maute leaders, Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute,
in front of a crowd of soldiers, political officials, and rescue
workers. Nearly 200 soldiers and police officers, and nearly
1000 ISIS fighters, predominantly teenagers between 12 and 16
years old, perished in this 5 month siege. Symbolic speeches
and political gains aside, there are no winners in war.

I just hope people get to learn this in time before we destroy our beautiful world.
