The United States of America has said that it would continue to be concerned about the killing of hundreds of people in Jos, Plateau State.

A release from the Public Affairs section of the US Consulate General’s office, a copy of which was obtained by Saturday Tribune in Lagos, on Friday, said that the deaths and destructions were horrific and that the American people sympathised with the families affected by the violence.

The release expressed the need for issues that continued to spark violence in the state to be addressed in order to end the cycle of conflicts.

“We welcome the calls by the National Assembly to look into the issues and note the efforts by the police to bring to justice, the perpetrators of the violence.

“We also plan to work with Nigerian government institutions and non-governmental organisations to help respond to the humanitarian needs along with other donor partners,” the release stated.

Also, the Muslim Congress (TMC) has said that it was perplexed that another round of crisis could erupt in Jos, when the January 2010 crisis was still being investigated.

The group said the fresh killings were an indication of absence of effective security apparatus and good governance in Plateau State.

In a press release, the TMC called on the acting president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, “to act swiftly to forestall escalation of the senseless killing and acrimony in Plateau State.”
