I believe the raging storm in the blogosphere about the status of Lagos state whose officials are everyday begging the federal govenment to give lagos a special status can be sorted through the following ways.

1. The Creation of a New commericial capital for Nigeria by the federal Governement, which i propose to be Cross river state or Kogi state because of the large expanse of cheap and good land for industrilaization this will be followed with a deep sea port , linked with Rail ways to the other railway hubs.

2. The total divestment of all those (igbos) who regard lagos as no man's land is imperative, the divestment will include the sale of fixed assets like landed property , movement of non fixed assets to the New Commercial capital of Nigeria.

3. The movement of all Federal Government agencies like NNPC, NPA, NMA, NIMASA ,FAAN .CBN , NRC , NIPOST , NITEL left over to the New commercial capital of Nigeria and the relocation of the federal staff manning the offices to the New Commercial capital of Nigeria.

4. The Auctioning of Federal buildings and investments in Lagos and divestment to the New Commercial Capital of Nigeria. Federal Secretariat, National Theatre, National stadium surulere, Nation Museum and Monuments and other numerous federal owned buildings etc

5. The building of an International Airport relocation of High commissions, consulate offices to the New Commercial Capital.

And who told you the FG built Lagos into a commercial capital.
When Awolowo was building the first industrial Estate in Ikeja what was your Zik doing?
BTW you epileptic jaundiced history failed to educate you that there's a difference between Lagos FCT and Lagos State.

you are quite correct the FG did nit build the industrial estate but if you check i did not mention industrial estate in my write up , clearly mentioned federal scretariat and other offices owend by the FG. if Awolow left his seat of government which clearly was in ibadan and built an industril estate in ikeja how does that prevent the Federal Governemtn contemplating a new commercial capital.

Federal secretariats Hqtrs have since relocated to abuja, what you have in Lagos are mere Auxiliary offices.
Awolowo was the western region leader in which Ikeja district and a larger part of Lagos was under. I know most of you don't know this and always ignorantly assume that the whole of Lagos state was the former FCT.
Lagos became the commercial capital of Nigeria due to the foresight and forthrightness of it leaders and not because the FG made some budget available for its development into a commercial capital.
Same cannot be said of your eastern leaders who always depend on others/FG to change their Diapers.

So wake your leaders up to develop your eastern states too to a commercial capital before you also start complaining about Ogun state being the Industrial capital of Nigeria.

that will amount to wastage and lack of foresight at this time of history, where will the funding come from? and how will you pay back?
Resources should be directed to the southeast and part of south south where there is little or no federal presence, open the eastern markets to the world by creating infrastructural development including building seaports and airports that will attract foreign direct investment.
Nigeria should start learning from her mistakes instead of the mundane and outdated means of quelling tensions using guns and bullets.

Abi o, they have three of the largest markets in west Africa but they can't leverage on that to develop any of their state into a Commercially viable state.
All they know is FG, they will never hold their docile and ineffective leaders responsible.

Lagos is yoruba land and yoruba land is lagos.
None of the nonsense requests in your post shall be granted and yet lagos will remain yoruba land.

I in particular is happy that some of you igbos are disrespecting yorubas concerning lagos by calling it a no man's land, i am happy that you are barring your mind on the internet for us to read and know your motives. And believe me we are already taking note as many of us who are asleep before are now awake, and You igbos will soon begin to feel the heat of your unguided statements concerning lagos ownership, and when this starts you would play the victm card as ussual and then surrender and acknowledge the simple fact that lagos indeed belongs to yorubas.
Lagos shall continue to be the commercial capital of Nigeria and if you are not comfortable with it go back to your village in the East and create your lagos.

I wonder how these kids gain access to Nairaland.
When are we going to start criticizing topics from a neutral view. Must everything be tribalized??

Even If the OP is Igbo, he mentioned Kogi or CrossRiver as his choice of new commercial capital, away from His region, yet you guys are picking on him with IPOb comments.

Please who did this to us. We are losing it in all angle.

If a new federal commercial capital is built by the federal government it would reduce the current strain and stress on Lagos and the constant wailing by Yoruba's about who owns Lagos ,who developed Lagos and about Igbo domination of Lagos. The Igbo's will have a place to expand their enterprises without harassment the Hausa can have a place they can finally try their hands on administration.

This would be a win win case for everyone if it is in Niger delta
Re: The Federal Government Should Build A New Commercial Capital For Nigeria by oyatz(m): 8:38am On Dec 08, 2019
This post is borne out of a complex and dangerous mix of ignorance with Tribalism.

1) Lagos wasn't created by the FG as a commercial capital. Lagos EMERGED over time as the commercial capital due to it's Geographical location, History and Leadership.

2) Lagos has been an important Maritime city for at least 400 years, long before the creation of Nigeria

3) Kettykin probably doesn't know that the FG has moved it's Secretariat and the HQs of nearly all it's agencies to Abuja since 1991.
4) The FG offices in Lagos State are actually branch Offices or at best Zonal Headquarters. These kinds of offices are also in all the 36 States capitals/Zonal Headquarters. E.g every State have CBN and Federal Secretariat branch Offices.
Some FG parastatals also have Headquarters in other States. E.g the Apex Military Institution and industry in Nigieria (NDA and DICON) are in Kaduna State. NPA is in Lagos because of it's Maritime status.

5) Most of the Embassies of Foreign Nations are in Abuja.
They are however at liberty to set up consular offices anywhere they prefer in Nigeria. It's not the business of Nigerian FG to decree where they should set up their consular offices.

6) Most of the FG Landed properties have been privatized or slated for privatization.

7) Conscious and deliberate efforts by the FG and concerned States' Governments are needed to decongestant Lagos through PPP intiatives.

cool New Seaports should be built along the Coastal States. Super Highways to and from these Seaports should be constructed.

9) Heavy duty industries should be set up in all the 6 Geopolitical zones, utilizing the readily available resources in these regions accompanied by grade-A road networks, standard Housing facilities, sophisticated Healthcare facilities with efficient Transport system, reliable portable water supply, regular electricity supply and stainable waste disposal mechanism.

These will stimulate the economic growth of these zones and discourage unhealthy rural-urban migration to Lagos.

OBJ tried initiating what the OP is suggesting during his tenure when he ordered the banks to move their HQ to the FCT. The idea was to turn ABJ into not just the administrative centre of Nigeria but also its commercial centre. The bank heads obliged, but later found out that you can't artificially 'force' this sort of developments so they just had to relocate BACK to Lagos. Lagos remains the commercial capital simply because it enjoys some strategic advantages that can't just be created by fiat or government action. It's just that simple.

None of what you suggested have not been tried in the past

A commercial capital emerge, you can't just create it, especially in a money driven economy like Nigeria.

Businesses will simply invest in where they can make the most profit.

This is now another fat lie, shenzhen China is a commercial and heavy industrial city that was started by the Chinese in 1979/1980 there are other examples, even Saudi Arabia is building a new city.

I think Edo and Delta state will be a more viable option. West to the left and East to the right will meet in the center. No more fighting. Maybe even add parts of Kogi so it can link to Abuja. You now have a big big expanse of land as the capital.

Bigots want to legislate a commercial capital into existence as if there is a legislation naming Lagos as Nigeria’s commercial capital.

If you want a rival to Lagos, tell your governors and businessmen to build one in your region. The western region led by Awolowo created the industrial hubs of Ikeja, Ikorodu Ogba etc and successive Lagos state governments build on it.

Tinubu introduced a lot of reforms to help Lagos achieve a mega city status. He initiated the Lekki free trade zone that now has a refinery, fertilizer company and seaport. Eko Atlantic, the most beautiful city in Africa is currently under construction and it was initiated by the Lagos state government under Tinubu.

Fashola, Ambode and Sanwoolu have Labored to build massive infrastructural projects to further develop the state. Roads, school, market, hospitals, bridges, complexes, BRT, metro rail etc that we have all over Lagos were build by Lagos state government.

So you see, the commercial status of Lagos state is not a creation of a legislation or Federal government. It is a creation of the successive governments of the state and a product of the exceptional industriousness of Lagosians. You can’t replicate this by hatred and bigotry.

In as much as the good governance Lagos has experienced since 1999 is sustained, Lagos will always be Lagos. No amount of hatred, bigotry and tribalism can bring Lagos, a Yoruba state down. Know this and know peace.

Lagos became the capital of Nigeria because it was already a commercial center long before the entity Nigeria was formed. That was since 1890s when it had tram, street lights, bridges, well paved roads, electricity, banks, train, telephone etc.
