Magic according to Mauss is referred to as "any rite that is not part of an organized cult; a rite that is private, secret, mysterious and ultimately tending towards one that is forbidden". They are acts extraordinary, impossible, appealing, diabolic and bewitching which are carried out to satisfy a want/desire.
In a general context, magic is an act that negatively defies the law of reality that operates in the environment, but this shouldn't be confused with innovations (personal, social & technical) that defy the law of reality in a positive way in the environment, such are permitted clauses in the general law of reality. Over the years magic occurs in two defined settings (a) for actor, or to audience (doing the forbidden according to an actors will to himself or a targeted audience) (b) audience to actor(actor doing the forbidden as accepted and backed up the will of the audience. Magic enchants its participants in three kinds of form (i) forecasting (ii) illusion (iii) hallucination. Actors who practise magic have be called magicians, wizards, witches, sorceress, high priestess, etc
There are three types of magic (1) spiritual magic; which transcends in the realm of the supernatural (2) constructed magic; also known as make beliefs, tricks, supported by a scheme put together to make it work (3) conceptual magic; also known as social magic which is going to be the main focus in this article, it transcends in the social context of our society.
Social magic is a discovery, a social act that exist in our society, very complex and dangerous, performed by social magicians (private persons/institutions) in the modern era. It is based on conceptions that exist, shape and influence humanity in the society. This kind of magic does the extraordinary, forbidden, impossible that defies the law of social reality in a negative underscore, satisfying the actor and receiving participants, altering a positive and established pattern of process and arrangement.
The origin of social magic is traced back to this truism that exist in the world, it is that the world is composed of three concepts; illusion, phenomena and reality. Another factor according to N.W Thomas and Freud was that what led primitive men to come up with magic is the power of wishes" his wishes are accompanied by a moto impulse, the will, which is later destined to alter the whole face of the earth in order to satisfy his wishes". Thus in a social perspective, it is out social wants(wishes) like money, fame, women, power, curiosities, etc that drive members of society to the edge to indirect and directly practice or perform magic, to be magicians altering the very municipal or broader environment they live in to satisfy their want.
Social magic has been occurring in Nigeria based on the two defined settings earlier stated, for example; the audience to actor setting; in Nigeria, there is high value and appeal for money by majority of its members because of what satisfaction it can do for them but because of weak economic system, these majority became a vulnerable audience to social magic shows like ponzi scheme, sports betting, etc the ponzi and betting magicians came to town, enchanted many by their get rich quick process which thrilled them, relegating hard work, self determination and investment. Social magic are effective when they can hypnotize an audience that have a high appeal for a particular concept. This is the backdoor, ether and weak point the social magicians capitalizes on, bewitching a considerable majority to satisfy themselves and their audience. Another example: students that are unprepared for an exam, a social magician(s) in the form of exam invigilators will appear to satisfy these students want of passing all subjects in their exams through malpractice.
The bewitchism is false, misleading and altering, given an unforseen social power to persons/institutions who take opportunity to enslave, invoke and possessively direct their social audience to do their will while satisfying them of their wishes/appeal they have set up in their hearts and minds. This is a social transaction, A SOCIAL MAGIC (ragadimobidi).
