Digital switch over: Lai Mohammed under probe
MINISTER of Information, Culture and Orientation, Lai Mohammed’s role in the transaction and overall processes in Nigeria’s bid to switch over from analogue to a digital system is to be investigated.

He is allegedly being fingered in untoward activities in the switch over programme.

For instance, a motion to probe him is currently in the making, outside the recommendation of the ad-hoc committee which investigated the process of digital (Broadcast) switch over in Nigeria headed by Sunday Katung and approved by the House of Representatives which among other considerations suspected foul play and underhand dealings in some equipment supplied by one of the vendors alleged to have the sympathy of the information minister.

The committee is demanding that issues surrounding the quality of equipment supplied by ITS, a licensed firm and distributor in the switch over scheme and said to be dear to the heart of the minister be investigated.

The committee has also directed the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to ensure that ITS equipment are standard and in line with global best practices, while also asking that the probe must also ascertain the actual amount paid to ITS by the NBC.

The probe is to determine the procurement infractions observed during the oversight and the current status of funds, income and expenditure as utilised and generated by the NBC, the parent ministry and any government agency involved in the digital switch over.

However, giving details on the matter, the member representing Ikpoba, Okha Egor Federal Constituency, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, accused the minister of under the table dealings.

He accused him of using his position to advance funds far above others who are more competent.

Agbonayinma said the minister is a complete opposite of President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption and declared that” we must bring Lai Mohammed to probe”.

He said it was a slap on the country that Mohammed is influencing the process to bring in incompetent people whose capacities cannot carry television stations in the country.


According to him, “two companies, Pinnacle, ITS and the information minister will be probed to ascertain what is exactly on ground, alleging that the two firms paid nothing and are among signal distributors because Lai Mohammed is using his power to perpetrate fraud.”

“This is appalling because some people are bent on derailing the corruption fight of this administration.”
