Can someone please shed light on the relationship between the Kanuri and Fulani ? I don't understand some of the comments on this and the previous related thread. Why do some people refer to the Fulani as masters of the Kanuri ? 1 Like |

IamaNigerianGuy: During the jihad the Fulanis captured and destroyed garzagamu the kanem capital forcing the move to and founding of what is now Maiduguri. However , the kanuris were never actually outrightly defeated by the jihadi forces. Going off more entrenched Islamic heritage and the means to defend themselves they were able to hold the fulanis at bay. But this deadlock was to the favor of the fulanis as most of the western Fringes of what was the borno empire now lay In Sokoto's hands. Fast forward to naija era; the mantle of leadership for the north stayed with the NW with the NE as an appendage. Mind u the sultan ia the amir musulmumini or whatever. There's kanuri elements that find this unsettling. But they can't do anything. Sokoto never ruled them. .nevertheless the uniqueness of their civilization has been covered by the dominance of the Fulani in the present Nigeria setting. Watch some old clips of Yusuf of book haram fame preaching. He mentions the issue with the sultan and how that should not be their leader etc. In fact the phenomenon of their sect is rooted in their doctrine of exceptionalism and heritage of being Muslims 600-800 yrs before anyone else. Basically kanuris are not as powerful as they'd like to be with the Fulani in charge. 4 Likes |
