The Oyo State Government has commenced the demolition of 200 blocks of dilapidated classrooms, while it has set aside the sum of N5.6bn for the construction of new ones.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adeniyi Olowofela, who stated this in Ibadan during the demolition of some of the classrooms at the Ibadan Municipal Government Primary School III, Mokola, Ibadan, on Thursday, said the state government had approved N2bn for the construction of blocks of classrooms in 100 schools across the state.

Olowofela said, “The administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi has decided to leave a lasting legacy. We have equally identified the need to build new structures and renovate those ones that we can renovate. But we have realised that there are some structures, especially those ones that were built in the 1950s with mud bricks, that could no longer stand the test of time because of structural problems. There are many of such structures in our schools.

“It is the directive of the government that such structures should be pulled down and this is why we are pulling this one down. I also need to reiterate that government has set aside N5.6bn to construct new buildings in our various schools in the state, aside from model schools.

“Currently, the sum of N2bn has been awarded for 100 schools in our various secondary schools. We have also set aside N3.5bn for primary schools. The old structures that we inherited, which are no longer useful to anybody and which have become dens of criminals, armed robbers and thieves structures, are being pulled down.”
