For soloke, the US-based idiot who said there was ''nothing to celebrate in Nigeria'', I think Nigerians have just told you in a loud resounding voice where to go stick it:

Nigeria: Lagos Carnival of Colours

Stella Odueme And Ekene Okoro

6 April 2010

Lagos — It was a display of colours and great cultural heritage on Monday Easter as Lagos, city of aquatic splendour came aglow. It was the First Lagos Carnival and indeed, as early as 8 am, people in theirthousands were seen trekking from parts of the state to the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), the venue of the carnival.

Varying designs and bright Costumes spoke volume; the city was charged in what looked like the Brazilian Fanti Carnival and people from far and near converged at the venue to witness the display.

However some of the designers said they used their creative minds to fashion out the varying costumes and that it was not that they copied them from somewhere.

Some came from other states just to ensure their wards participated. For instance, Carol Ogbhemhe, who came from Edo State with her daughter, Grace Odugala to take part in the carnival, stated that all she wanted was for her to be involved in the celebrations.

"I came all the way from Edo State just to ensure that my daughter participate in the fun," she said.

Thus, the sitting space at the TBS was filled to capacity as families took advantage of the Easter Monday holiday to catch fun.

Not even the traffic gridlock across the Lagos Mainland could deter fun seekers as most of them opted to get to the TBS on foot owing to the fact that the Lagos State government had earlier announced that it would restrict vehicular movement to access roads to carnival routes to enable participants move with ease throughout the duration of the carnival.

The carnival featured over 14,500 participants dressed in over 93,000 pieces of proudly made in Lagos carnival costumes as they paraded and danced while fun seekers and tourists feasted their eyes on the colourful display.

The carnival which kicked off at about 10am saw a total of 3660 children, 61 schools with 60 pupils from each school takek part in the children section of the carnival. They paraded different parts of the state including Ketu, Isolo, Ikeja, Mushin, Epe, Obalende, Ogba with all the participants later converging at the TBS for the grand parade.

At TBS where the State Governor, Babatunde Fashola and his entourage were, a revival of the nation's heroes past and present in form of statues sent the crowd in wild jubilation.

Statues of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late MKO Abiola and the late Fela Anikulapokuti were on display. Also living legends like Governor Fashola, his predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu were among those on display.

The governor in his speech said that the carnival had come to stay as it would be a celebration of the city's ancestral and plurality of identity.

"On the carnival coming in the wake of the Lagos Black Heritage Festival, he revealed that the state government has decided to leverage on the enormous tourism and economic development potentials of these festivals as a high point of a week of exposition of African culture and heritage to millions of people both events would attract.

"Both the Black Heritage Festival, the Boat Regatta and the carnival would take the nation back to the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Even if we forgive, we do not forget, we have resolved to turn adversity into prosperity. The Lagos carnival which is now combined as a high point of both events into an Easter tourist programme for Lagos signals our commitment to move way from those painful memories when families were separated at a point of no return and to transform those memories into a significant rebuilding exercise and the triumphant return. We have brought out our families, our food, creativeness, our industry to really show our colour in Lagos", Fashola stated.
