AN American man pleaded guilty today to charges of conspiring to carry out a killing spree targeting African Americans, including then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, the Justice Department said.
Daniel Cowart, 21, of Bells, Tennessee, said he had plotted with Paul Schlesselman of West Helena, Arkansas to carry out a racially motivated plot to murder dozens of people. He said he had planned to culminate the attacks by assassinating Mr Obama, then a US senator and presidential candidate.

"Despite great civil rights progress, this unthinkable conspiracy serves as a reminder that hate-fueled violence remains all too common in our country," Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the department's Civil Rights division said .

Under terms of a plea agreement, Cowart faces between 10 and 75 years in prison.

In documents from court revealed in 2008, the pair's plan involved killing 88 black children and decapitate another 14, the UK Telegraph reported in 2008.

The plot was to centre around a predominately black school in Tennessee - the US state where Martin Luther King was assassinated over 40 years ago.

The men had planned to go on a killing spree before assassinating Mr Obama as their final target.

Cowart met his co-conspirator Schlesselman on the internet and had "very strong beliefs and views regarding 'White Power' and 'Skinhead' views," ATF agent Brian Weaks told a Tennessee court in 2008.

The plan involved the pair stealing a high-powered rifle when they would "drive their vehicles as fast as they could toward Obama shooting at him from the windows,” he said.

"Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt. Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt."

Schlesselman pleaded guilty in January to three counts and faces 10 years in prison under a plea agreement.
