Former Nigeria goalkeeper Raymond King has died on Monday at the age of 52.

According to King’s former teammate, Taju Disu, the former Abiola Babes keeper died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after he was transferred from the Ikorodu General Hospital.

King was last week reported to be down with partial stroke and memory loss, and was initially admitted at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Disu said

“He was transferred from the State Hospital, Abeokuta to Ikorodu General Hospital yesterday (Sunday) when his condition was not improving. The news got to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health; he directed that King should be taken to LASUTH for better treatment,” Disu told our correspondent on the telephone.

“On Monday evening, he got to LASUTH but we were initially told that there was no electricity to commence treatment. But when they eventually set up their equipment to treat him, he was already struggling to breathe and he later died.
“Raymond was part of us and we tried to get the best of treatment for him but he has left us.”

King, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, worked with the Ogun State Sports Council.

King was a member of the 1979/80 Flying Eagles and he played for Shooting Stars of Ibadan, who he helped to a second place finish in the African Champions Cup in 1984.

He also won the 1987 FA Cup title with the defunct Abiola Babes of Abeokuta. He is said to be survived by a wife and four children.

I weep for my country. When are we going to get over this power issue?

...if it was the son of one of the politicians now, he would have long been flown to the UK

RIP to him

embarassed cry
Nigerians are one of the most ungrateful, unappreciative , and "throw way face " people in the world .
This is not just in government , but in offices as well , your hard labor and passion for your job is usually not rewarded , you are never made to feel special.
Look at America , they really have nothing special, but they make each other feel special thats why they are better and light years ahead of us .
They value their soldiers ,sportsmen, engineers ,scientist etc , they treat them like legends even before they die , but wetin go end this man case na statue , thats if they even do it at all.But they forgot him when he was alive cry cry
Let's not give up on Naija , it starts with me and you , we wiill get there gradually .
Rest in peace sir .

RIP Raymond King. I can't forget how excited we were when you graduated from Methodist Boys High School, Ibadan. It was a relief to other secondary school football teams in Ibadan that you're no longer in charge. Great days of Ojokojo (metho), Wasiu, Jomo, Tosin and co, all of Ibadan Grammar School.

Sleep on beloved

Watched him play live several times @ d national stadium Surulere Lagos. A shame that people we saw as stars; now die as rats. I stopped criticising long ago - sports personalities that demand for pay first before offering their services. Big SAME.

Yeah we used to call him Ramoni Oba, never knew his actual name was Raymond King. Fond memories and great rivalry with Edward Ansah of the old Leventis United.

Sleep on big bro.

POVERTY REALLY LED TO THIS MAN'S DEATH

Nigeria is just a fake country.

How can such a young man who have served his father's land SPORT WISE be so neglected till he finally died.

He is even a native of the Niger Delta oil rich region of Akwa Ibom state.

The government of Akwa Ibom state should have come to his aid to fly him abroad to get better medical treatment overseas.

Why should Christmas Carole Night occupy the main priority of the government of Akwa Ibom state?

Governor Emmanuel Udom should stop wasting public funds to host christmas carole night at the expenses of pressing needs like the health of this late sports man.

R.I.P Goalkeeper Raymond King of Abiola Babes.

I remember in 1986 at the filled-to-the-rafters National Stadium, Surulere. Reliable defender, Toyin Ayinla of Abiola Babes, under pressure from Uwem Ekarika of Leventis United, attempted a loooooong back pass to Raymond King. However, Toyin Ayinla somehow contrived to lob the ball over the head of Raymond King, who had left his line, to score an own-goal in favour Leventis United of Ibadan during the FA CUP final.

Late Chief M.K.O Abiola, owner of Abiola Babes FC, sitting at the V.I.P State box, was at the stadium that day. He put his two hands on his head and screamed "YEEEEPARIPAAAAA!!!" at that incident. LMAO!

Abiola Babes were highly favoured to win that match and they battled, to no avail, for an equaliser until the final blast of the whistle. Toyin Ayinla and Raymond King both wept like babies after that match.

Nigerian football was so interesting then.
