They expect Samsung to open a silicon mining firm in Nigeria, revive Ajaokuta steel firm, launch an iron ore and aluminum industry, revive PHCN etc.. All in the name of manufacturing phones in the damn country.

If global companies reason in that manner, none will survive the first year of business operations.

The way Nigerians reason baffles me a lot. It is clear we don't even have the human resources. So I guess Samsung will end up building new schools in the name of producing phones in the damn country where minimum wage stands at #18,000. Phones that majority can't even afford the screen.

Anyone that picks offence on seeing this glaring facts about Nigeria should have his/her head checked. Let me remind us all that Nigeria has one of the worst power supply/generation in the whole world.

Tecno and Infinix sef never consider manufacturing in the country grin Best they can do is exactly what they've been doing -- produce the phones in China, ship it down to Nigeria, and get some dancers, print some blue Tecno shirts, get some choreographers and speakers in Ikeja grin grin When it comes to hiring dancers, street marketers and disturbing the whole computer village with noise, we are very good!

the problem of manufacturing and other sector of the economy is finance. finance sector of the Nigeria economy needs total overhaul and restructuring. however, the reason why Nigeria is backward is simply due to fools and corrupt being we are called legislators in this country, they have no knowledge on how to move this country forward they only deliberate not legislate. in South Africa that he compared to Nigeria, the finance sector is very vibrant and it's the base of all other sector like other developed and developing states of Europe, Asia and Co. the legislation enabled financial services providers to provide loans and installmental payment on all fronts. Samsung is expensive but a normal working South African can buy it brand new and pay for it for 24 months, there's no such in Nigeria where citizens has no accurate database to check background records and other dealings. it's all centred on legislation. mining of solid minerals alone can generate over a million graduate jobs in Nigeria but the few that are mining the resources illegally won't let a serious miner come in. it's only God that can give us our LKY like he did for Singapore.

The Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Samsung Electronics Africa, Mr. Sung Yoon, on Thursday disclosed that manufacturing a mobile phone required about 400 different components, none of which is available in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, he stated that another reasons Samsung Electronics could not establish a manufacturing plant in Nigeria is because the company’s market share in the country is not big enough.

Yoon pointed out that though Samsung was the leading consumer electronics company in Nigeria, its share of the Nigerian market is smaller to South Africa’s.

He said that the company’s smartphones market size in South Africa is 80 per cent, but is lower in Nigeria...

Let me add to that list of what Nigeria dont have::::::
1. Electricity - This means that Samsung will have to either run on generator most of the days or have to generate own electricity, waste of funds

2. Good roads - This means movement of labour and products will be a pain in the neck and employees will arrive to work late, waste of money and delivery of goods aren't guarantee to make it there on time or even make it there at all - waste of time and time is money

3. Good medical facilities - Manufacturing of mobile phones comes with some injuries or exposure to some of the parts is dangerous to health and God forbid that happens, where will they treat the workers - i guess Samsung will have to have their own standby clinic on site - Another shame on our so called animals being called leaders

Till the government address these areas, COMPANIES IN NIGERIA WILL HAVE TO WASTE SO MUCH MONEY ON THINGS THAT OUGHT TO BE READILY AVAILABLE, AGAIN, IT TAKES A GOAT OF A LEADER OR LEADERS TO THING IT IS OK FOR HUMAN TO REMAIN IN DARKNESS AND THEY DONT SEE URGENCY IN FIXING SUCH . . . . .Fela already said they are all animals in human skin

When we still have leaders who are making arguments why herdsmen should not use ranching, Nigeria will never develop, the greater part of the population are anti progressive.

Meanwhile people are dying in the hands of some individuals and government cant even identify the treat level let alone copple the murder rate. A country with a government handicapped to secure the lives and property of her citizens, any sane person is expecting the same government to booster or implement facilities to create enabling evironment for mobile phones production? Who no fit keep you safe na buying you beans and bread dey important to you?

Basically, he is saying you need us more than we need you. We are not going to bother setting up a manufacturing plant in your country when you will buy our phones regardless.

He says they can't manufacture their products in Nigeria because the 400 or so materials needed for the manufacture of mobile phones are not available in the country. My question to him are those materials available in his native country of South Korea or the United States or any other country for that matter? It is a very lame excuse.

If we had our own local manufacturing industry for mobile phones, I would say the government slap a high tariff on mobile phones and you will see the likes of Samsung coming to their senses.

For example, a very necessary "MATERIAL" is electricity. Truth be told, we dont have it to a level where a manufacturing company can depend on it. A barber in his shop cannot even depend on it, talk less of manufacturing company. Do we want phones to be manufactured with generators?

I read somewhere online sometime back that one of South Africa's airports generates more power just for the airport alone, than the entire Nigeria can generate.

The government cannot slap a high tariff on mobile phones because they cannot produce it for their citizens. If they do it, the likes of Samsung and co will pack their bags and which phones will you and I use? Else, the phone companies will increase their prices. So who pays for the high tarrif at the end of the day: the rest of us.

This is probably the real reason why they don't won't open up a factory in Nigeria

Samsung says broadband makes South Africa mobile market bigger than Nigeria’s ON JANUARY 18, 20188:36 PMIN NEWS, TECHNOLOGYCOMMENTS By Prince Osuagwu Samsung Electronics yesterday said South Africa’s mobile market is still stronger than that of Nigeria despite huge difference in population. The company, however, said that Nigeria has the potential to overtake the market with time adding that developments in the market at the moment has already shown that this would not take long to happen. Chief Executive Officer, Samsung Africa, Mr Sung Yoon, said despite South Africa’s population being a fraction of Nigeria’s,deep broadband penetration and almost total adoption of smartphone, makes the market bigger. According to him, “South Africa has almost 95 percent of its mobile market purely on smartphones and 4G/LTE has deep roots in the market unlike in Nigeria where in the overall market feature phones still takes a good percentage and 4GLTE is not widely accessible” Apparently, that could be why Yoon said that building a manufacturing plant in Nigeria is a project Samsung would not think about now but in the future. He said: “there are certain factors taken into consideration before building a manufacturing plant. We have to consider market size, Return on Investment and environment among others. But it is a thing we have to consider in the future” Yoon also hinted on why Samsung drastically reduced staff in its Nigerian office, saying, “in the heat of recession, we needed to do some adjustments. We needed to have more passionate, young and talented people while some others are dropping out. It is a normal company operational strategy not for any other reasons” he added.

Also keep in mind that all their factories are located in Asia, none in Europe and America where they have a strong market and relative large market share. If America and Europe don't have a factory, it might be a bit ignorant to assume Nigeria will get one or Africa at large...

Over 70% of components in iPhone is Samsung licenced product. Its why samsung holds monopoly of mobile phones across the globe after Blackberry dropped out.

Meanwhile, Im getting Blackberry KeyOne soon. Have you seen it?

This just goes to show how powerful SA is. Its not a record scientist to prove this, SA has more than 2000 Malls and Nigeria has 26, the buying power of SA is way bigger than that of Nigeria. SA has 6 million DStv subscribers whereas Nigeria has 1.6 million.

Vodacom has less subscribers than MTN, but vodacom is the biggest telecom company in Africa and its main customers are in SA.

The propaganda that is fed to nigerians about the population is alarming.

South Africa has the highest cars per capita in Africa. One in every five people in South Africa owns a vehicle. In 2012 alone, more than 250,000 units were sold there. Here you will find the largest vehicle market on the African continent.

My broda, people are humorous.

As of 2010, China only contributed 5.7% of the value of the iPhone that is made in China.

Most if the high tech components were imported.

Who knows, Samsung could actually set up shop here but the country unpredictable protectionism will eventually ruin it.

The next thing, FG will ban the importation of 10 of the components and state they must be made locally.

FG will demand the casing be made locally. Is it not ordinary plastic? That is when Samsung know they don jam one chance.
