The shut down will not affect essential workers ie postal workers, active duty military personnel, prison guards, federal law enforcement personnel, air traffic controllers etc. They will be required to show up for work, but unfortunately, will be working without pay.

Moreover, US federal employees deemed as non-essential, will be furloughed ie such workers will be told not to resume work as long as the government is shut down. As many as 850,000 workers fall into this category.

The current shutdown could cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $6 billion per week. Ouch!
