The crisis in English-speaking Cameroon is overflowing on neighboring Nigeria. UNHCR has registered nearly 10,000 people fleeing the crisis in their country. Relief services in the state of Cross River speak of at least 33,000 refugees, scattered in villages, housed in families, in the utmost precariousness. Local authorities and UNHCR draw attention to the need for camps to house these populations.
"We have identified nearly 33,000 Cameroonian migrants. A large number arrived by road. But some people cross the forest, others the river. So it's very difficult to record them on our databases," says John Inaku, Cross River State Emergency Management, and Management Manager.
