Delta state government has put 5,555 widows in the state on a monthly wage of N5,000 under its social welfare scheme for widows.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa flagged off the scheme in Asaba with 220 women—20 from each of 11 wards in the council area that comprises the state capital.

The scheme also means the women are enlisted for a contributory health cover.

Senator Okowa who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, said, "The state government will pay for their premiums monthly. A total of 5,555 widows drawn from the 270 wards in the state will participate in the scheme which will commence at the end of January, 2018.

He explained that the welfare scheme was another addition to the prosperity agenda of government as over 1,200 youths and ward Liaison Officers were presently benefitting from the Government Empowerment Scheme.

This is all a publicity stunt, expect the program to fizzle out after the first few payment, and then everything returns to square one.

This will just help them to remain in poverty, can't we empower them, as in buid industry and give them jobs.

How exactly is this program funded? How long do they receive payment? This will determine how sustainable it is.

This is cool. With the way that scheme is set up, a philantropist can decide to leverage on the contact the govt have with the widows to reach out to them in the future.

Good question, but to me the best thing about the widow list is that, it is likely to be of high accuracy as the N5,000 isn't too attractive to draw dishonest people near.
Private individual looking to reach out to genuine widows might just leverage on such list.
