The Economic and Financial Crime Commission has filed a fraud charge against the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Justice Danladi Umar.

The EFCC in the charge sheet alleged that Umar demanded a bribe of N10 million from one Rasheed Taiwo in 2012, the case was filed at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.

Count 1 read: “That you, DANLADI YAKUBU UMAR, being the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal and presiding over a case with Charge No. CCT/ABJ/03/12, involving one Rasheed Owolabi Taiwo, sometime in 2012, at Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did ask for the sum of N10,000,000.00 (Ten Million Naira) from the said Rasheed Owolabi Taiwo, for a favour to be afterwards shown to him in relation to the pending Charge (No. CCT/ABJ/03/12) in discharge of your official duties and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 12(1)(a) & (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2003.

About time that guy is removed as chairman of CCT.

This issue of bribery against Umar was already on against him by the EFCC so there was already the issue of bias because he'd obviously have been under pressure to deliver Saraki and free himself. Now the EFCC couldn't sustain charges with which he could convict, they're back to take their pound of flesh.

Another mumu logic.... Isn't it questionable the way and manner he acquitted Saraki?? If he has collected bribe before, as suggested by this charge, and if found to be true, it stands to reason that he may have collected bribe from Saraki to subvert justice. Hence, there's an urgent need to throw him out of the Justice system lest he keeps frustrating the war against corruption.

You should have shown concern when the EFCC chose to have Saraki's matter heard by a judge whom they were already investigating for bribery. It's not a recent discovery. That is why it is easy to interprete that they wanted to use him to trap a bigger fish because he was already compromised.

Saraki also raised this issue of bias in his appeals but the EFCC prosecuting at the time opposed that argument and it was not upheld.

He isn't the only judge at the tribunal. If EFCC was worried about his penchant for bribery, they should have been the first to expose that aspect but now it's blown up in their faces they want him out before Saraki is possibly retried as directed by the CA.
