@poster.
Question:
Who needs the service, you or the company you work for?
If the answer is your company, then answer this:
1. Where in the country is your company located?
2. Is your company wanting to hire a permanent developer or is it for a one-time project?
3. Does your company currently have a software development department?
4. If the answer to 3 is yes, what programming language do they work with?

You can learn any language or programming paradigm that catches your fancy and that is very noble and good. But if your sole aim of wanting to learn this language is to tackle some problem which your company (a financial institution) is facing, then you are putting the cart before the horseshit. No offence.
The company is better off hiring seasoned programmers who will give a quick and proper solution to the problem without the added risk of beginners error putting the whole thing in jeopardy.

Don't train yourself on the battle field, train in a boot camp then go to war or better leave the war to the seasoned soldiers.

your company needs an application designed and you are willing to pay and learn how to program. why not ask the company to pay for training. or hire someone proficient as recommended above.

the reality is that, if you want to learn java, php, asp/asp.net, c# or anything you want to use. take into consideration that

it will take you some time to become knowledgeable and procificient to accomplish the task. a couple of months of intensive practice. you have to eat and sleep the programming language. so while you are busy learning, time's a wasting for your company's application. so lets say maybe you study for 6 months and then you go to drawing board for another six months of practicing and writing modules. then give or take one or two months for testing. thats pretty much over a year at least to get a finished product from you.

or you can decide to acquire the skill for personal development and if the need arises, you will be ready to do it next time. or get a better job with your new skill.

@Poster, let me make sure I understand what you are saying here. You want to take about 6 years to proficiently learn how to program, so you can build this professional financial software, which your company needs now?
Re: Software Development by s4: 7:30pm On Apr 25, 2010
@saintiyke, It is the best interest of you and your company to hire a professional software developer, or a part time software developer, or engage a company to develop it for the company in need of it.
