The check engine light is the most mysterious of all of the dashboard lights, as well as the most menacing. It’s one thing when your tire pressure monitoring system light comes on, but it’s a whole different ball game when there could be something wrong with your engine.

The check engine light can mean many different things, from a loose fuel cap to a misfiring engine. It doesn’t mean you need to immediately pull your car over to the side of the road, but to be safe, it’s best to take it to your mechanic to see what may be wrong.

Reason why your Check Engine Light may be on

1)When your oxygen sensor needs replacing
Your oxygen sensor measures the amount of unburned oxygen in your vehicle’s exhaust system. A car with a failed oxygen sensor will appear to operate normally, but generally will not pass an emissions test.

2)If the fuel cap is loose, damaged or missing
The fuel cap seals the fuel system and helps maintain pressure within the fuel tank. It also prevents petrol fumes from being released into the atmosphere while you aren’t driving your car.

3)When catalytic converter needs replacing
Catalytic converter protect our environment by converting harmful carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Without a properly working catalytic converter, your car will be unable to drive, due to inevitable engine failure.

4)Mass airflow sensor needs replacing
It measures the amount of air entering the engine to determine how much fuel is needed to run your engine efficiently. Your engine may experience reduced power.

5)Insufficient exhaust gas recirculation valve flow
EGR works by recirculating a portion of your engine’s exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. Whenever the EGR valve is blocked or not working normally, engine performance can go down.

6)Spark plugs or plug wires need replacing
Spark plugs ignite the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber of your vehicle.Spark plug wires deliver the spark from the ignition coil to the spark plugs. Neglecting to replace your spark plugs will ultimately cause engine failure.

Reason why your check engine light is blinking or flashing

A blinking or flashing dashboard light usually indicates a more severe problem. It usually indicates a severe engine misfire allowing unburned fuel to be dumped into the exhaust system. There it can quickly raise the temperature of the catalytic converter to a point where damage is likely, requiring an expensive repair.

So when your check-engine light appears either blinking or constant, don’t ignore it. If you postpone repairs, you risk additional damage that can cost thousands of naira to fix.

Bros please what could be wrong with my golf4. It just started loosing pressure to move and couldn't climb the smallest of hill. When I accelerate it just seize breath totally unless I half the throttle pedal. We thought it was filter, later plug and fuel pump...we changed each on different occasions...now it reverses but merely goes forward...at times it just goes off..

This is not correct, car will still drive and engine will not fail, but fuel consumption may increase without a properly working catalytic converter.Except the exhaust pipes are blocked by the broken pieces of the cat converter.
You are right, but the check light will also switched on

More often than not, when the car is tokunbo and more than 2-3 different mechanics have worked on it, the check engine light seemingly becomes unreliable

The 'check engine' light was on in my Honda crv for over 2 years, in my presence my mechanic used that 'check engine light' to scam one woman of over "50k" so since that day my personal principle became if i am not hearing "kan kan gbo gbo" then there is nothing wrong with my car, sometimes i will even be hearing it and i will just increase the music and say to myself "not today devil!!!" angry

You just made my morning with this hilarious comment.

Not today devil ooo!!!!

I wanna paint my car and a friend adviced me to use sikkens auto base paint. Honestly I don't know were to get their office to buy the original of that paint. I don't trust road side ones. Anyone with their contact address should pls drop. I am buying it myself cos I was told some of this painter will charge you for sikkens but end up using alternative paint. Also they don't actually oven bake the cars but they charge for it. Anyone with sikkens contact office in Lagos should pls drop it here. Thanks

Awesome info!!! Thanks OP.
I have this check light on and engine would fire like it's jerking when on low speed. Mechanic faulted 2 plug cables. Had them changed. But noticed recently the jerking again and check light hasn't gone off even after chaniging the 2 plug cables.
What happens next?
Pls gimme a hint before i revisit mechanic. Thanks a bunch OP

Your car's brain box may be having issues, I used to see it on my car but ignored it hence the reason why the car won't have pressure at the first start until after over 10 minutes of starting it. When driving, I observed that it can't do much speed at time like needing higher speed to overtake.

It could also be engine oil cover, oil shortage/rreplacement either in engine or gearbox. It could also be airflow pipes leakage. Sometimes, if you pick up a car made for American weather, knowing fully well that once it comes over here, your mechanic will advice you to remove the thermostat that helps to heat up the car to function appropriately to commiserate with the weather in order not to overheat the car . By removing such device, you could get a check engine signal on a steady. Hope this helps

Have your pathy scanned for the possible codes, but blinding check engine light on Nissan pathy means a catastrophic failure.

I had same issue on mine when the cat converter ripped apart and block my exhaust.

Scan indicated multiple cylinder misfire.

Good day everyone pls I really need help with my car, I sold my Honda accord Eod for 420,000 December because the engine knocked and I couldn't spend any money for a new engine. If I tell you how much I bought it you will weep for me. It all started with overheating as soon as I leave the house in less than 10 minutes it will over heat like hell and car will stop. I changed top casket twice but nothing changed it was the 2nd I changed that's when the engine finally packed up. The oil pump stopped working probably from the over heating and you know what happens next. Metals started grinding and that was it. Had to sell the car. Now I bought a Volkswagen Jetta last month because its cheaper and I believed it will be less expensive to maintain, but lo and behold its overheating again I have changed top casket last week and as I am writing this I don't drive the car again because I am scared it might go and knock this one engine again. Pls what could be the problem with any car I buy always overheating. Is there a way I am driving that others don't drive. Mind you the fan is working fine and very well. I need help

hard luck bro.

However, replacing the top gasket to solve over heating issues won't yield the desired results.

Replacing the engine of your Jetta will solve the issue.

Jetta is a good model from the Volkswagen family. You probably bought an abused Jetta car.

Sure, ride is back from mechanic and better. He figured it's the airflow stuff. Got them two changed! And that was it! The jerking stopped. He also cleaned the battery head and the Check light went off.
Thanks brother, at least i had an idea from your post what mechanic's options were before i revisited!
Thanks again.

Please my toyota corolla 2000 check engine light has been blinking for 2 days now. When I on it to warm it in the morning, after like 2 seconds of starting the key, it will make one sharp sound close to the timing belt and immediately the car will off. I have been seeing some codes before now which are :1, vvt system malfunction bank 1
2, System too lean bank 1
3, Random multiple cylinder detected.

What can be the problem or how do I solve it please.

Thanks
