One of the biggest challenges Nigeria has faced since it gained independence almost 60 years ago, is the problem of power supply. And if like us, you grew up hearing the highly confusing fact that despite not having light, we manage to sell electricity to other countries, you'll be glad to know the reason why. But we cannot guarantee that it will make you feel better.

At the Presidency Quarterly Business Forum in Abuja, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, explained why our country supplies electricity to places like Niger and Benin Republic - countries that enjoy better power supply than us.

According to the Minister, some of the rivers that sustain our main source of power supply, the Kainji Dam, flow from these countries. So, in exchange for not damming those rivers and preventing them from flowing into Kainji, the countries got, well, mandatory supply of electricity from Nigeria.

Basically, instead of our leaders finding alternative means of power supply or at the very least an agreement that doesn't give off hostage situation vibes, we find ourselves in this very weird situation: we don't have light, but the people who "lent" us resources to get light, and sell to them, do.

Doesn't this make you feel even worse?

Clownish jerk if you do not sell electricity to Ghana n co, they will dam the river and you will have neither have the water to generate your own electricity nor the revenue generated from selling generated electricity to them. You don’t criticize just for the sake of your tribe is ridden with hateful. You criticize with intelligence. Now, I know that has been replaced with hatred in 99.945 Igbos.

Abi o, let's continue in darkness na...Since we like to fool ourselves in this part of the world..
The revenue generated from selling electricity what is it used for?
Leave igbos out of this....
There are some cabals that benefit from our darkness..They make money from darkness. And except there is a bloody revolution in this country, there shall be no light in Nigeria!!

This government is just government of excuses
How much electricity do we generate from River Niger that all those countries will now hold us to ransom (a whole giant of Africa grin )?
What happen to all our thermal generating stations and all those water powered stations that do not depend on River Niger?

Atleast, there's no waste. They are selling.
The main issue now is, where is the money?

Damming a river does not stop its flow

it will reduce the flow rate, hence the capacity to be used as hydroelectric source... I want to believe you will prefer to buy power from Niger. Meanwhile, we have other sources, selling kainji power to whoever is the least of the problems

NONSENSE, RUBBISH!
Didn't fashola and apc know that the rivers flow through other countries, when they campaigned and ASSURED nigerians constant power supply.
There is NO will to provide constant power, because there are elite individuals benefitting from 9ja's poor power supply.
Notice how this administration gives silly excuses for their ineptitude & failure... smh

Damming does not reduce flow rate
According to Bernoulli's law
So far as the dam is not in the process of storing water in its reservoir, the mass of water flowing in is same as the mass of water flowing out.

What may be affected is the pressure energy of the water.

What is the proportion of electricity that is being generated by Hydro (Dams)? I understand it's less than 25%, with the rest being from gas fired plants.
---
So, are we giving out a portion of this Hydro power or we are giving out portion of our entire electricity? I'd like to be enlightened.

the truth remains there is a massive improvement and stability within the power sector.7000 megawatts of electricity is at our disposal but due to transmission constraints there is capacity under utilization couple with the unprofessional and technical know how of those that rush to claim the resources during their days within the corridor of power. The fact remains that the old have since been mortgaging the future of the younger generation and now parading themselves with a view of dictating whom we shall vote.

Why are nigerians so inferior to Ghanaians?

Where in the article was Ghana mentioned?

And how can a useless country like nigeria sell electricity to a far better country like Ghana.?

Do you guys really have to always compare the zoo called nigeria to Ghana?

Ghana will rather be exporting electricity to nigeria very soon

You Nigerians are full of inferiority complex.

Always trying to compare your useless country to GH.

Shameless inferior people.

I laugh in Latin....You can deceive one but not all, every country is looking for there success if Ghana or Niger have the ability they will create there dam. but dey didn't proving the ly from fashola...
when river benue (lokoja) bridge over flowed what we heard was that Cameron opened its dam, so Cameron have its own dam yet water still flow into river Niger... The earlier they stop their lies the better for all of us. .
