Revamping Imo Economy Through Agriculture….jeff Uzor by chuksahamefule: 10:12am On Mar 07, 2018
Everywhere around the globe, agricultural production is central to the overall wellbeing of the populace. This is why countries place high premium on agriculture and strive to develop and protect the sector, thereby guaranteeing sustainable food security, employment opportunities amongst others.

From the creation of Imo state on the 3rd of February 1976 till date the chief occupation of the local people is farming the local farmers produce cash crops such as oil palm, raffia palm, rice, groundnut, melon, cotton, cocoa, rubber, maize, etc. and also consumable crops such as yam, cassava, cocoyam and maize are also produced in large quantities.

The agricultural potentials of Imo state is such that any smart reasoning governor does not need to go to the federal government cap in hand to beg for alms to develop Imo.

If given the mandate to govern Imo state I Jeff Uzor will create an agricultural revolution policy that will compete with the best of global agricultural policies across the globe and make the Imo economy move away from a handout dependent economy to an agro based economy.
With the abundant deposit of Palm oil across the 27 local government areas of Imo state, and the fruitful lands of ABO–MBAISE growing Cassava, Fruits, Oil Bean Seed, Bread Fruit and Vegetables the lush lands of AHIAZU–MBAISE also produces Cassava, Fruits, Oil Bean Seed, Vegetables and Bread Fruit in commercial quantities.

EHIME–MBANO LGA produces in commercial quantity Oil Palm, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables while the arable lands of EZINIHITTEE – MBAISE yields Oil Palm, Cassava, Fruits, Vegetables, Oil Bean Seed, Bread and Fruit, while IDEATO–NORTH and IDEATO SOUTH is famous for the production of Cassava, Rice, and Oil Palm, IHITTE–UBOMA LGA is renowned for Oil Palm, Cassava, Fruits, Rice and Vegetables and the soils of IKEDURU has in abundance Oil Palm, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables.

ISIALA MBANO has Oil Palm, Cassava, Oil Bean Seed, Fruits, and Vegetables, the rich arable lands of ISU grows Cashew, Cassava and Oil Palm, MBAITOLI LGA has in abundance Cassava, Oil Palm and Rubber just as NGOR–OKPALA has Oil Palm and Cassava, the lands of NJABA produces Oil Palm and Cassava and NWANGELE LGA is known for high yield of Oil Palm, Poultry and Cassava.

In NKWERRE Palm Produce, Cassava and Oil Palm is produced almost in all corners of the LGA while OBOWO LGA has Fruits and Poultry, OGUTA LGA an aquatic zone has in commercial proportion Cassava, Fish, Yam and Oil Palm.

OHAJI / EGBEMA grows Agro Raw Materials such as Cassava, Oil Palm, Fruits, Rubber, Plantain, Banana, and Palm Wine, OKIGWE has Cashew, Oil Palm, Cattle and Citrus while ONUIMO has Oil Palm and Cassava.

Owerri north and west is home to Oil Palm, Poultry and Cassava with the rich soil of Owerri growing Livestock, Fruits and Rubber, Oru North and Oru West LGA,s has Oil Palm and Cassava while Orlu and Orsu LGA,s has Cassava and Oil Palm in exportable quantities if well managed and harnessed.

While states like Ebonyi, Anambra, Lagos, Cross river, kwara, Benue, Akwaibom,Taraba Kaduna,Kano etc. are developing their agriculture and tapping into the preponderance of opportunity the sector provides, Imo a state richly blessed with both mineral and natural resources is yet to develop the right agro economic attitude necessary to grow the state beyond handouts from federal government any right thinking government should be able to develop Imo into an agro based economy just as the great Chief Sam Mbakwe did despite being from an opposition political party was able to develop the then Imo state with agriculture and revenues generated internally, created wealth and gave youths employment.
Returning the glory days is possible and Jeff Uzor is positioned and ready to make Imolites smile again.

JEFF UZOR
