In a welcome but rather unexpected twist of events President Donald Trump of the United States and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are planning a meeting.

This follows the delivery of Kim Jong Un’s invitation via a letter to Trump at the White House yesterday by South Korea’s National Security Director Chung Eui-yong, who visited the White House accompanied by intelligence chief Suh Hoon and South Korea’s ambassador to US, Cho Yoon-je.

The North Koreans have also offered to suspend missile and nuclear tests, the condition US officials have laid down for the start of any substantive talks.

Chung Eui-yong had led a 10-man South Korean delegation to the North on Monday where he had discussions with Kim Jong Un who ended-up agreeing to a summit with South Korea’s President, Moon Jae-in and in turn extended an offer to meet President Trump.

Trump took to Twitter to announce his acceptance of the offer tweeting:

“Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!”

A meeting between the two could happen in May this year and would be an historic and pivotal moment since the armistice agreement that halted the Korean war in July 1953.
