Truck drivers on bridges around Apapa area of Lagos were on Monday forced to make U-turn after the Nigerian Navy commenced enforcement of the quit order.

The military and state government had last Wednesday issued a 48-hour ultimatum to truck drivers to vacate all bridges in the state, citing security and safety concerns.

Although some of the drivers immediately adhered to the directive and relocated to other roads and inner streets, others dismissed the directive, claiming they had nowhere to go.

Among those who refused to obey the directive were tanker and articulated truck drivers on Wharf Road, Marine Beach and Mile Two Bridge, who claimed they were on queue to enter the port.

But with the commencement of enforcement order, the navy asked the drivers to return to their parks.

All trucks earlier parked on the Mile Two Bridge had been evacuated, while those at Orile along the Badagry Expressway were being moved in batches.

Also, heavy duty vehicles parked in Western Avenue, inward Apapa, were also making U-turn towards Costain.

The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Sylvanus Abbah, said the navy would not allow any truck to stay on the bridges.

He said the enforcement was being done in batches to prevent traffic gridlock across the state.

Abbah said: “We are doing the enforcement in batches. If we cover all the bridges at once, there will be standstill in Lagos and we do not want that to happen.

“My men worked at Berger and Otto Wharf axis today (Monday). All the trucks on the bridges up to Boundary have been moved. Those at Orile are being moved in batches of 10 or 20.

“Also, we have ensured that there is no static truck on the bridge leading into Apapa from Western Avenue. We would go after those ones still on Eko Bridge.

“The directive remains that we do not want trucks on Lagos bridges and we would not stop until they comply. I am meeting with the leadership of NUPENG and those of trailer drivers again on Tuesday.”

Every uniform organization wanting to flex muscles.
Whereas Boko haram is having a filled day even in their technically defeated state..
Show of force won't solve this problem..
This is more of logistics and leadership problem...

Sadly, this goverment (State and Federal) thinks and administers in Silos.

EVERYTHING AFFECTS EVERYTHING.

When Ambode was told in a debate that only a functional multimodal rail line in and out of Apapa would solve the traffic debacle he scoffed.

Now you want to get rid of the trailers by fiat without a functional alternative.

When fuel scarcity starts you will say it's your enemies, and begin to slander your village people when in reality you are simply doing battle with your rank stupidity.

(sadly, their stupidity is rewarded by simply awarding a billion naira contract at our expense to you know who to do 'traffic study')

The navy is the military. It isn't just any uniform organisation. Military isn't army alone. And not all are Boko Haram. You realize these Naval members are posted abroad on peace keeping? Posted to dangerous places too?

That you don't know doesn't mean it isn't happening. #RespectTheMilitary

Hmmm....from the comments I can see why they need to use the military to enforce the order... nothing can be done without brutal force.

Shame! The Nigeria military is now reduced to civilian police.

Army fighting cultists and Robbers

Navy clearing tanker drivers from bridges.

This is same navy that can't fight piracy in international waters.

how can one respect a military that has been reduced to a police department fighting domestic issues like cultist and robbers, tanker drivers etc.

Your hashtag should be #MakeTheMilitaryProfessionalAgain

Do not blame the military for that. Blame the police. If the police are professional, Nigerians would take them serious and the military wouldn't have to be involved.

Do you think Soldiers enjoy standing at road checkpoints like police and road safety? You think they enjoy it?

The rule against the tanker drivers have been on for years but the tanker drivers IGNORED the police. Is it until lives are lost or accidents begin to happen that the military steps in? If the police cannot do their jobs, don't blame the Armed Forces for stepping in.

Besides the military doesnt go up against cultist or Armed robbers. And even if they do, you should be grateful. Fix your police. It isn't the soldiers fault that the police don't know their jobs.

From the perspective of the Navy, the tankers block access roads to the wharfs and this is a huge security breach. Imagine if pirates attack our wharfs and outpower the Naval officers stationed at the wharf, it will take hours to provide backup from other stations since the roads are permanently blocked by queues of lorries and tankers.

But then, its not the drivers fault, there is basically no alternative! Are you asking them to go back to which of their parks? There is virtually no trailer parks close to our wharf which is a big disadvantage. If these guys vex say dem no lift fuel again, economic activities will be crippled in this country and it will affect everyone.

Sibe007:
Why the Navy??

Navy is directly in charge of providing security on the wharfs since they man the water ways.
