BREAKING: Inflation rate drops to 14.33% in February – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday said the country’s Consumer Price Index which measures inflation rose by 14.33 per cent (year-on-year) in February 2018.

The bureau in the report said the 14.33 per cent rate for February is 0.08 percentage points lower than the 15.3 per cent recorded in January.



The report said this is the thirteenth consecutive months since January 2017 that the country would be experiencing slowdown in inflation.

On a month-on-month basis, the index, according to the NBS report increased by 0.79 per cent in February 2018, down by 0.01 percent points from the rate recorded in January.

It said food Index increased by 17.59 per cent (year-on-year) in February, down by 1.33 percentage points from 18.82 per cent recorded in January 2018.

During the month, the NBS report stated that all major food sub-indexes increased.

But if the report had read that the inflation rate has gone up by a very minute %, trust wailers like yourself to be all over the news. That is the issue here. If it goes down (and it has for the past many months months now) at least acknowledge it.

Naira going for almost 500naira to a dollar, inflation increasing, price of rice increasing, food generally on the increase but you and your likes were happy.
Now the same NBS is telling you things are moderating, you are now angry.

The slowing of the inflation rate is driven by a decline in the pace of food price increases. It means prices of food are no longer soaring but stabilizes. This will later be followed by fall in food prices. Eventually, this will lead to reduction in CBN interest rates. They are all interconnected.

If its not increasing, its either decreasing or it remains the same.

Inflation rate was 17%
If its soaring or increasing - it goes beyond 17%
If it remains the same - it stays at 17%
If its decreasing - then it will also reflect on the price of goods and services.

E.g when inflation was 17-20% the price of foods like rice was around 17k to 20k
Then when the inflation rate came down a little to like 15-16%, it reflected in the price of rice and other foods.

But since or last year, the price of commodities have remain the same, yet they are telling us that inflation has decreased, and you expect us to believe that?

Coming down of the inflation rate will eventually leads to price of food items decreasing in the coming months. I wrote that earlier.

You still don't get it. Inflation rate dropping does not mean the price of goods will drop immediately. You will need to take some courses in economics to know the difference between inflation, deflation and how they affect price of goods.

You still don't get it. Inflation rate dropping does not mean the price of goods will drop immediately. You will need to take some courses in economics to know the difference between inflation, deflation and how they affect price of goods.
