Police authorities have confirmed that an Uber self-driving car hit
a 49 year-old woman, Elaine Herzberg and killed her while crossing the street in Arizona, marking the first fatality involving an autonomous vehicle.

This is a fatal blow to the self-driving technology which is being developed to reduced road accidents and deaths. The ride services company said it was suspending North American tests of its self-driving vehicles, which are currently going on in Arizona, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

The so-called robot cars, when fully developed by companies including Uber, Alphabet Inc and General Motors Co, are expected to drastically cut down on motor vehicle fatalities and create billion-dollar businesses. But yesterday’s accident underscored the possible challenges ahead for the promising technology (as it could slow its development or outright ban) as the cars confront real-world situations involving real people.

U.S. lawmakers have been debating legislation that would speed introduction of self-driving cars.

Some questions about autonomous vehicles are: Will they be totally safe? Can they respond to real life situations and emergencies on the road? Will they be feasible in areas where technology is still low, for example, Africa? A lot of questions begging for answers.
