Does Islam Prohibit Smoking Or Selling Drugs? And Drinking Or Selling Alcohol? I by kzubyar(m): 7:18am On Mar 23, 2018 |
Yes, Islam prohibit consumption and trading of alcohol and other intoxicants. it is considered as one of Al-Kaba’r (major sins which whoever commit them is to be punished either in life by the government of in the afterlife by god), the same apply to illegal drugs since it can also intoxicate the consumer. smoking is not prohibited unless you’re smoking something that result in intoxication or affect you ability to think clearly. (if that’s the case it also considered one of Al-Kaba’r), however, even smoking normal cigarettes is considered by many Islamic scholars to be a sin (smaller one) since it harms the body and increase chances of dangerous diseases, but it is not prohibited or banned in Islam. keep in mind that the consumption of any intoxicants even in small not harmful or intoxicating amount is still considered prohibited as will be mentioned in Hadith #1865. I will mention some verses of Quran and other texts from Hadith regarding alcohol and intoxicants. In Quran, Surah Al-Ma’idah, verses 5:90 and 5:91:[1] “(5:90) O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. (5:91) Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?” In Jami’ At-Tirmidhi, Hadith# 1865:[2] Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah : That the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: "Whatever a lot of it intoxicates, a little of it is unlawful." Footnotes [1] Surah Al-Ma'idah [5:90] [2] Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book Number 24 Hadith Number 1865 6 Likes 2 Shares |

why is smoking haram? Published Date: 2000-12-27 Praise be to Allaah. Perhaps you know that all nations of the world – Muslim and kaafir alike – have now started to fight smoking, because they know that it is very harmful. Islam forbids everything that is harmful, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.” Undoubtedly there are foods and drinks which are beneficial and good, and others which are harmful and bad. Allaah described our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the following terms (interpretation of the meaning): “he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods) [al-A’raaf 7:157] Is smoking one of the good and lawful things (al-tayyibaat) or one of the evil and unlawful things (al-khabaa’ith)? Secondly: it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah forbids you to trade gossip, to ask too many questions and to waste money.” And Allaah forbade wasteful extravagance when He said (interpretation of the meaning): “and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance) [al-A’raaf 7:31] And He described the slaves of the Most Merciful as follows (interpretation of the meaning): “And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” [al-Furqaan 25:67] The whole world now knows that the money spent on smoking is to be considered as money wasted, from which no benefit is gained; indeed, it is money spent on something harmful. If the money which is spent on smoking worldwide were to be collected, it could have saved entire populations who have died of starvation. Is there anyone more foolish that one who holds a dollar bill and sets fire to it? What is the difference between him and the one who smokes? Indeed, the smoker is more foolish, because the folly of the one who burns a dollar bill ends there, whilst the one who smokes burns his money and also harms his body. Thirdly: how many disasters have been caused by smoking, because of cigarette butts which are thrown away and cause fires. Other disasters have been caused in other ways, as when a house was burned down with its occupants inside, when a man lit his cigarette when there was a gas leak. Fourthly: how many people are offended by the smell of smokers, especially when you are unfortunate enough to have one of them standing next to you in the mosque. Probably any nasty smell is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker’s mouth when he has just woken up. It is amazing how many women can put up with the smell of their husbands’ mouths! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade those who had eaten garlic or onions from coming to the mosque so that they would not offend their fellow-worshippers with their smell. The smell of onions and garlic is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker and his mouth. These are some of the reasons why smoking is haraam. https://islamqa.info/en/10922 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Let not your own hands contribute to your destruction Smoking or consumption of tobacco in any form is HARAM (Prohibited) in Islam and there is no second opinion about it. There are various reasons as to why this is strictly prohibited in Islam. Firstly, the reason for this question could be because of the fact that cigarette smoking was uncommon during the era of prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him) and in the period of revelation of the Quran. However, the Quran is far more superior as it being a pure revelation from God, unparalleled or unmatched to any other scriptures or books claiming to be the word of God, foresee the social development of human society and framed the laws in such a way so as to guide human being as to what is good and bad, thereby providing utmost guidance to live peacefully in this world and attain success in the hereafter. Though there is no direct mention of tobacco or cigarette by name in Quran, it does contain categorical prohibition to all forms of harmful consumption in a more generic sense. It does not speak like an ordinary book/pamphlet that contains instructions with DO’s and DON’Ts. Quran is far more compendious and superior in its conciseness, eloquent in its content and informativeness, just like, how the Quran prohibits consuming all sorts of intoxicants without mentioning any specific type of alcohol by name such as beer/wine/rum etc. There are clear verses in Quran that prohibits this. “Do not kill yourselves” (Al-Quran 4:29) “Do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction” (Al-Quran 2:195) These verses unequivocally indicates that usage of anything that causes harm to our body and soul is prohibited. Today we know how harmful and detrimental the cigarette smoking is. Smokers are not only spoil their own health, but also their family, neighborhood and the whole environment. There are over 300 toxins that are expressed from the use of tobacco. Among them the most dangerous are 1.Nicotine, 2.Carbon dioxide, 3.Carbon Monoxide, 4.Carbon tetra Chloride. All these are related to Carbon dioxide concentration. The body parts which have impact over smoking are tongue, interior mouth, cheeks, sinus (interior nose), throat, Pharynx, Larynx, Esophagus, air line vessel inside the Lungs, Liver, Stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine, Kidneys, Pancreas, male and female productive systems, heart, brain and eyes. This means almost all the body parts are affected with the consumption of tobacco. Nicotine and other toxins shrink the small, large and middle blood vessels thereby sealing the blood vessel to reduce the circulation of blood to the blood vessels. This gradually makes the body parts deactivated at one point of time. Carotid blood vessel which takes blood to the brain gets shrunk which in turn causes stroke. In a family, if a husband/father or a brother is a smoker, then his breath that comes out of his mouth or nose and the toxins that are present in his breath affects the women, children when the happen to inhale the same breath. Particularly the little ones who take mother’s milk get affected due to this toxin that comes out of a smoker’s mouth/nose which affects them with problems such as indigestion, lung disease and Diarrhea. These toxins even affect the fetus which is in the mother’s womb due to the lack of blood supplies and it ends up in an incomplete or premature delivery. Even if it’s a complete delivery still babies born of mental or physical defects. Based on the reports of UNICEF, there is a higher rate of miscarriages among expectant mothers who smoke, and smoking during pregnancy has been linked to low birth weight, a factor strongly associated with infant mortality and illness. Smoking in the home has also been linked to an increased incidence of asthma and acute respiratory infections in children. It also causes bladder and uterine related problems. Heart attack is one of the main causes of Smoking. Smoking causes all the blood vessels shrink thereby shrinking the three main blood vessels which distribute pure blood. Because of this the heart muscles get lack of pure blood which spoils the heart and causes heart attack. Smoking also causes asthma, allergy, pneumonia and Tuberculosis in the Lungs. Cancers relevant to tongue, throat, esophagus and stomach are the primary results of smoking. The shrinkage of the bigger blood vessel and the branch vessels which are connected to both the legs causes a disease called Trombo Angiitis Obliterans (Buerger's disease). This gives severe pain to the victim gradually causing his fingers get worse. This eventually leads the patient lose his fingers. Smoking is the prime reason for all these diseases, Take a resolution now to give up this human enemy (abolish the habit of smoking and the use of tobacco). May 13 th of every year has been announced as “Anti Smoking Day” from United Nations council. Even then the numbers of smokers are abnormally increasing. Especially this habit is attracting teenage boys and girls as per the recent survey reports. Just by doing awareness program in a particular day will not help out to abolish this smoking habit. Government orders that Cigerette, Gutkha(a type of tobacco in India) should not be supplied for the teens under the age of 18 , but sadly this is rapidly growing among the younger generation and students of schools and colleges. Teens get addicted and spoil their health endangering their lives; The Prophet ( ﷺ ) said, “The deen (religion) is naseehah (advice, sincerity).” We said, “To whom?” He ( ﷺ ) said, “To Allah, His Book, His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk.” Reference : Sunan an-Nasa'i 4199 In-book reference : Book 39, Hadith 51. Our Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) said the religion is sincerity and advice to others for the betterment and advancement in religion. so there is no room for anyone to come up with something and claim that it is allowed while it is harmful to himself and the society ,when Islam is pure religion and way of life framed by God for the betterment of none but mankind. Another subtle point worth mentioning here is that all the organs including our body and soul is deemed Amanah from Allah. [Amanah means trust, property legally entrusted to someone with instructions for its use and be returned duly as trusted]. Since it is an amanah , none holds the right to hurt/destroy/spoil or misuse it. Hence no one can hurt/kill/abuse his organ, body and soul. We will be reckoned about these in the Hereafter life. As the Qur’an says, “And follow not that of which you have no knowledge, verily the hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those one will be questioned” (Quran 17:36) https://www.quora.com/Is-smoking-haram-in-Islam 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Yes, anything that could harm your body or cause illness and death is Haram . So, smoking is Haram for the harmful sequences on your body. Also, this fatwa is based on the verse on Qura’an (chapter: 2, verse: 195) “Do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction” , which forbid people from harming themselves in anyways. 1 Like 1 Share |

personal59: # I can see how much you continue to labour hard to tag smoking cigarettes haram. Unfortunately you haven't brought any clear cut dalil. # OP is very right that smoking is not haram in Islam. It is not also halal therefore the best legal judgement of it is makruh. # Yes cigarette could be harmful and dangerous to health. In fact, the slogan is smokers are liable to die young. However, there are lots, yes there are lots of people who have been smoking for donkey years without health problems. And there are also nonsmokers with complicated health problem. Therefore the health associated problems of cigarette is not 100% to rule cigarette as haram. 1 Like |
