Synthetic Motor Oil Versus Conventional Motor Oil Cold Pour Comparison Test by Automotive1(m): 1:06am On Mar 25, 2018

Synthetic motor oil's pure and uniform molecular structures impart properties that provide better friction-reduction, optimum fuel efficiency, maximum film strength and extreme-temperature performance.

Conventional lubricants, on the other hand, are refined from crude oil and contains elements such as sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and metal components such as nickel or vanadium.

Again, an important sign of lubricant quality is its ability to flow at low temperatures. When temperature drops, motor oils thicken and move slower, causing parts of your engine to remain unprotected for a short period of time.

The short clips below compares the way two different 5W-30 motor oils perform under very cold temperatures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9-kpu7VhRY

One is Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil and the other is a leading Conventional 5W-30 Motor Oil

This test shows the superiority of synthetic motor oil in cold weather. The synthetic oil readily pours while the conventional motor oil seems like it really is frozen, even after over 4 minutes.

The synthetic oil is more fluid at cold temperatures than the tested conventional oil, giving you 36% easier and faster cold starts.

This means that synthetic oil can reach vital components faster, providing more immediate engine protection and reduced wear.

I don't think modern vehicles are designed to use conventional oils anymore. Engines these days are built with such tight clearances that only synthetic oils can achieve the desired level of viscosity.

Thats why i used only full synthetic oil (5w20) and mobil1 filter in my camry. I also have 0w20,5w30 (extended performance) in stock.

Conventional oil is made from (base) crude oil and the synthetic oil is made from what source? OP you forgot this, let us know pls.

Full synthetic oils start protecting your car immediately you on the engine living no room for engine wear and tear.

So did my dad

Who am I to change things?

You will mostly see the differences in this oil@ cold temprature but here in Nigeria where temprature rarely goes below 23c, there is really no difference, in fact thats even when u need more viscosity in d oil

You're wrong. The viscosity of synthetic oil is still gonna help in the long run when your oil is due for change. Look at the second picture, it's like the conventional oil dried up overtime.

Can changing from conventional to synthetic damage the engine?
Again, which lasts longer? Synthetic or Natural

theres no doubt that synthethic oils are good for the modern cars, although the provide better lubrication, i must say they dont provide extended protection when the engines get high mileage, an example is the 2006 passat cam follower that wears prematurely due to inferior materials and use of very light synthetic oils.

those of you who own the 07 camry, accord and altima even vw and audi will agree thst thete appears to be an increased oil consumption on these cars, me yhinks its becos the synt oils used are too light , they lubricste well but dont protect engines from eesr and tear, my 10 cents exactly.

Synthetic oils are made by polymerizing short chain olefins and then hydrogenating them.

Well, the new name couples with chemitry analysis, make it sound, look different, the propthyne, enthyene, hydrogenerate carbons are rooted from crude oil.All motor oil base are source frm crude oil..the refine justified the end result .
