What The Maiduguri Attacks Says About The Nigerian Army. by Nobody: 10:04pm On Apr 02, 2018
The recent cowardly attack by the radical Islamic sect Boko Haram in Maiduguri is proof the Nigerian army is tactically illiterate, and unfortunately as has been norm , 15 Nigerians payed the ultimate price for the military’s incompetence.

Now, first of all suicide attacks can never be prevented. Once terrorism starts it never really ends, because there are an immeasurable amount of soft targets to choose from. But in this case the Nigerian army deserves criticism.

The Sambisa forest is a good 120 miles from Maiduguri. How on earth could Boko Haram freely approach Maiduguri, the headquarters of the 7th Infantry Division !!, attack and freely extricate themselves with uncanny confidence l.

They did not fear interception and ambush on the way in. They did not fear pursuit or encirclement on they way out. Clearly Boko Haram seems to have the same level of control of the countryside in Borno state as the Nigerian army. How did the attackers escape? Where was the newly activated Army Aviation?

Front the onset Nigerian ground forces have depended on the sister service for close air support, strafing, surveillance etc. But the repeated (and avoidable) loss of soldiers who went into combat promised air support but instead got ambushed, frayed the relationship, with Army officers making vocal complaints that the Air Force is not pulling its weight.

Troops on the ground say the Air Force has been out of touch, fulfilling only half of their requests that ground commanders say are needed to route and interdict retreating Boko Haram and called for the establishment of an air arm.

The Air Force refuted these claims and complained that the service has limited numbers of aircrafts and remotely piloted attack drones, so priorities for assigning them must be set by senior commanders at HQ. The President showed keen interest in Army initiative, and despite objections by the Air Force, the Nigerian Army fought its way into Attack Aviation, much to the frustration of the embattled Air Force leaders,

The Army Aviation Unit became fully operational in May 2017, with the stated mission of locating and attacking insurgents in battles with ground forces. Against this backdrop its incredible the Jihadi group could carry out such an attack and escape.

The Nigerian army should have obliterated Boko Haram by now. The army has nearly 200,000 men in active duty plus 53,000 in reserve. You don’t even need a fraction of this size to wipe out Boko Haram.

Nigeria has at least 4 Active Special Forces Expeditionary Units, that could be assigned the task. Locate enemy positions using Nigeria’s vast fleet of reconnaissance assets of all kinds. Assigned three separate units to attack from three fronts in a pincer, each unit backed by attack helicopters and Air Force Drones.

If need be the CH-3H Rainbow UCAV could be deployed. Its incredible the arrays of drones available to the Nigerian military. To put things into perspective, Russia still has no armed unmanned aircraft systems, and thus lacks a real-time recon-strike option for its drone platforms. Nigeria has Four in service.
It’s a very simple Mission : find, fix and destroy Boko Haram to the last man, woman, and child, by any means deemed, as necessary by the Commander on the Ground. With the regular army, para-military and air force as backup force, the assault Task Force could complete the mission in a week. Perhaps Nigeria should learn from the Chadians on how to use a small but highly mobile force to devastating effect using multiple front pincer attacks.

Nigerian army of course have the sufficient manpower but the problem is the ethno-religio-political bastardization by the Buhari government that have rendered it ineffective.
TY Danjuma alleged the same bias.
Recall this is the same army that have performed so excellently well in the then ECOMOG,UN missions till date. undecided

Technically maybe, but attacking defenseless soft targets like civilians is cowardly.

this is a religious war, this is a war of ideology , boko haram cannot be defeated with physical weapon, all you need is to introduce a superior ideology and they will be defeated, this boko haram guys are fighting holy war and what you dont know is that all the Muslims are supporting directly or indirectly because their gods say so, these boko haram guys dont want democracy or Nigerian constitution they want sharia and islamic caliphate, the Nigerian military is Muslim military, they will never fight the holy warriors, the north will not like the holy warriors to be defeated,

Nigerian military can bring down the whole west Africa into submission in a month in case you dont know, if you dont believe me go and ask Liberia etc,
the boko haram issue is a different case because the Muslim army dont want to fight against the army of gods, the Nigerian president the boko haram spoke man will not like to get problem with the army of gods, where ever the Muslims are living together with others faith and the Muslims are the majority, there can never be peace there, the northerners knows the boko haram guys very well but because they are gods army they will not do them anything and they will not allow non Muslim the infidel and pig to do them anything.

@SSGN, I fully support your article; the Nigerian Military is most probably compromised, if not, there is no way a "rag-tag" bunch of fanatics can just evade surveillance and attack targets that are hundreds of kilometers from their camp zero. The Dapchi abduction and Maiduguri attack both show that the army and airforce are simply not doing there jobs.
Either they need more sophisticated platforms or they need to purge their ranks.

However, on your analysis, we have to consider the fact that the terrorists are holding thousands of hostages, you can't just "take them out" without killing thousands of innocent civilians, so no matter the level of intelligence gathering, hitting them en masse will be very costly.

Interesting line of thought. So which superior ideology do u suggest we use to defeat them?

To even think Boko Haram had been technically defeated by Buhari and his goons is laughable and at the same time irritating undecided

And who told you this govt is interested in fighting boko haram ? This same president once said a fight against boko haram is a fight against the North when he wasn't in office, since assuming power he has gone on to become their major financier with millions of dollars made in payments and releasing of their top commanders like that charade in Kano where 500 prisoners were released with Mr president in attendance (a whole fùckin president travelled hundreds of kilometres from Abuja just to watch some guys released from prison ? Haba) Your idea about using drones to fight this war with ground soldiers doing mop ups is something even i as a civilian layman have suggested so I guess you know, the military knows what to really do.

Ps, the money used in buying aircraft for the army according to this article could have been used for the same purpose for the air force

To think that buhari was a former army general still confuses me. Since he assumed office the nigerian army has been reduced to more like military police. The nigerian army has lost some of her shine

Buhari would fund his boy for some more attack on innocent lives.

I still believe that if IPOB had been armed, there would have being no Nigeria today.

The NA army is a company of hungry demoralized boys scout.

3000 of them can't even challenge my girlfriend if she has a locally made pistol by her side.

Long live any man ready to pick up arm in self defence.

I still wonder why the NA has not defeated these rag tag group already. It seems we have decided to micro-manage the situation rather than flush it out. I believe we have enough military hardware to engage them once and for all and flush them out. I believe a lot of conspiracy is going on and the military is enjoying the fight and prefers it continues.

A single armed unmanned aircraft systems can raise hell much more 4 of those aircraft available. What do they use it for? To ferry vip's to owambe?

Let the military declare a one week operation on sambisa. Inform all locals, hunters and farmers to vacate the area. Move in with tanks and caterpillars and level the place. Involve our neighbours to watch the borders in case of fleeing terrorists. Use heat sensors from those aerial aircrafts to locate their cells and extinguish then all.

But then, what do I know?

You have a good point Op, though that's your thought on insurgency, but to be frank this guys are doing their best... Wars are not won by room analysis, the ground detects.. Our Govt are not serious about the armed forces while the top dogs in the force have become the problem of their organization which is need to be checked by we Nigerians because we financed them with our taxes.

That's a good point bro, but the IEDs will not allow free movement of troops in the forest. Sambisa is not like an ordinary forest you will just charge through without scanning, and there are places the UAV and other fighting aircraft's cannot see clearly due to the nature of the forest. Though I still applaud the Nigerian Army on the fight

Nice submission, truth is, people are benefiting from this boko haram war, they'd prefer the war never ends, thereby risking the lives of our gallant troops.

We can declare a full blown war on Boko haram, Pull half of our active service men there, engage them from all angle while receiving steady air support. I just believe this is more like a religious/political war, Our military men ain't weak, like someone said above "Nigerian military can bring down the whole west Africa into submission in a month".

Had IPOB taken up arms, there would be no Nigeria today. The Nigerian Army has no history of defeating anybody without international intervention. But it's a good thing IPOB did not take up arms despite all the provocation of the Buhari administration for them to do so. They are are not going to stay underground forever, and when they emerge, they will be an awesome force to reckon with

Nigerians love temporary victories, not realising that permanent victory is what matters
