As preparations for 2019 general elections gathers momentum, the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), yesterday warned religious leaders against making utterances capable of causing unrest in the country. Addressing newsmen after its National Executive Council meeting in Ibadan, the Islamic organisation noted that several issues have dominated public discourse across the nation, saying it appreciates the quality of some of the debates and condemns others. It expressed worries by the undue politicization of many of the issues by certain Christian religious, ethnic and political leaders. In a statement signed by MUSWEN’s Executive Secretary, Professor Dawud Noibi; President-General, League of Imams &Alfas South West, Edo and Delta States, Shayk Jamiu Kewulere Bello; Chairman, Board of Trustees; Prince (Judge) Abdul Jabbaar Bola Ajibola and President, Deputy President-General, NSCIA, Dr. Sakariyau Babalola, noted that the general elections was less than a year, calling on Nigerians, Muslims and non-Muslims alike to bear in mind the need to continue to live together in peace and harmony. According to MUSWEN, contest for political positions should not be a do-or-die affair, adding that it should rather be a contest of ideas about building a better future for Nigeria and Nigerians. The Islamic organisation expressed worries that some elders were pursuing a destructive agenda. The group which expressed concern by the continued clashes between herdsmen and farmers in different parts of the country and the ethnic and religious bigotry that had attended the development, “rather than see the crisis which has claimed many lives as a national emergency, some opinion leaders have, in an inexplicable manner, feasted on the chance that this affords them the opportunity to spew in the public space their deep-seated primordial sentiments.”

The military is not given the right approach to tackle herders/farmers crises. I hv not seen or heard of army carrying out exrcise in a situation where people are being killed on daily bases even in their presence..
