Breaking; Expect more deaths if cattle are stolen and if cattle ranches are not created - Audu Ogbe warns Nigerians

PARIS, APRIL 10, 2018: (DGW)

THE Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe has said there would be more deaths if nothing is done against cattle rustling and if cattle ranching is not created across the country.
He made the disclosure while briefing State House correspondents after National Food Security Council meeting at the State House, Abuja chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.
Ogbeh said: “We have to move the cattle to the good old grazing reserves and we just have to create environment for them; clusters of ranches where they have water, grass and security against rustlers.
“For nearly 40 years, we didn’t do much about cattle, we also forgot that cattle contribute six per cent to GDP. The cheapest way of rearing cattle is by roaming around with them as you see now. If you go into a ranch it is not cheap and government cannot subsidise cattle rearing like they do in Europe, where they subsidise every cow. We cannot afford that.
“So, the thing is to create those ranches and the herdsmen are prepared to pay tax to support the programme. If we don’t do it, next year will be worse than this year, I assure you.”
He further said, “Today, we resolved that we must make agricultural lending cheap and we are looking at interest rate at the lower end of one digit. We don’t have any figures yet but we are hoping that by the time we meet again we can announce that.”

Posterity will not be kind to Audu Ogbeh. History will definitely judge him harshly, for this statement. It appears he is serving as the mouthpiece of the killer herdsmen. And as he said that "there would be more deaths if cattle ranching is not created across the country," one needs to ask if he is one of the sponsors of the herdsmen. It is now clear that the Fulanis have used all the means at their disposal to close our dear Hon Innocent Audu Ogbeh' sharp mind from recognising the danger that has encircled nearly the entire country because of open grazing of cattle. Otherwise how could one explain this one-track-mind on a problem of this magnitude? This is most unfortunate! The worst part is that both the Fulanis themselves and the Federal ministry of Agriculture under Hon Audu Ogbeh have refused to engage experts in the field of animal production to advice them on how to maximise production without roaming about with the animals. Recently, an expert in animal production in one of the agricultural research institutes in Zaria laid to rest the unfounded claim by the Fulanis that their species of cattle cannot survive in ranches. He said the same grass that these species roam here and there to eat can be fed to them within fenced premises. Neither the Fulanis nor officials of the ministry of agriculture argued with him.

... Fulanis know that putting cattle in ranches could harm their quest for expansion, that's why they are not ready to take advice from anyone.
