It's all about office politics and "asss licking". Do both of this well and watch your promotion grow like a soaked garri. It doesn't matter whether you are competent or worthy of the promotion or not. This is how the Nigerian office politics is played.

Mine felt like a heartbreak. I started as a support staff even though my credential was way higher that the job description. I was however promised that if my performance was excellent i would be promoted. The first 6 months, i worked my ass off. Along the line my Superior was sacked for inadequate job performance and i was asked to fill up temporarily for him. This i did with vigor and ethusiasm and even cane up with new and innovatove ways of doing my job. My managers were happy with me and commended me. Infact i steadied the ship (the sacked employee left the position/responsibility wrecked). During end of the year review, my manager recommended me for promotion to the management. But alas when the posting and promotion came in. I was told that i would remain in my position meanwhile i should note that i had the potential to suceed. They employed a new staff to fill the temporary position i occupied, an employee that doesnt have the qualification i had. In was totally heartbroken. I felt maybe its because i was young for the position. But does it matter. I had the qualification, i have demostrated my competence and my immediate supervisor recommended me.

To cut the long story short, i dusted my cv and started looking for another job. And as God would have it. I got a job that was paying twice my previous salary.

For those of us that dont like office politics or licking ass to get promotion, the best thing is to not stay for more than 3 yrs in a particular establishment...

It can be so disheartening . I know of an organisation that is presently lossing all their competent staff to another bank because of this. Cheap labour and wants excellent result. Not treating the workers well can bring down the organization. I resigned because I was on a position for 6 years without promotion. They tell you cost can not accommodate it. But you see them promoting those that are not doing anything and at the peak of their career already. The way it's going I pray they don't fold up cos all the competent hands has left. #treatyourworkerswell#

It is in almost every organisation, not only banks.

At a point at work, your appraisal results move from what you know to who you know. It is not only about working hard, how well do you familiarise with the ogas at the top? An organisation can't just promote everyone because you have stayed the required duration on a level, that's expensive for them. So, they will do their best to reduce the number of staff that'll be promoted.

Of course performance will count, but favouritism would also come in. Work your way into your boss's heart, that's what I did with mine.
The problem only arises when an organization gives more emphasis to those who have warmed their way into the boss' heart, at the detriment of years spent or even work put in. I can't even begin to remember our work ratings and how annoying it can be sometimes. grin cheesy

I'm always being told to be a bit diplomatic in stating my grievances. grin I usually just say it as it is, even if all the bosses are there. cheesy

But, when it comes to creativity, performance and those to be counted on to deliver, no matter the short notice or how difficult the task is, they also know I am one of the few that can always, always be counted on.

I think a good boss would place performance first, the only boss that'll put favouritism ahead of performance is most likely an inefficient boss.

LOL,try being diplomatic ahbeg.
I do tell my boss my grievances, most times few days after giving her soup grin. Or whenever we go for outside duties, once she tells me the outcome of management meetings, I use that opportunity to tell her my mind. She does her best to adjust.

My observation is that the Nigerian structure is found on a weak basis. When I mean weak I mean it earnestly. Most bosses are incompetent and as such wouldn't want someone who's smart and better to rise to lime light. I once got a job and worked for a year before d firm employed a new staff. In less than six months, the guy was made to manage manage me. I was so heartbroken, it got me so heartbroken because the said guy doesn't know much as I have tried to learn one or two from him. To be frank I am leagues ahead of this dude. I tried some place else and got a better paying job. Nigeria would grow when dey stop favouritism, petty politics, mediocrity and appreciate brilliance/merit.

Most people were faced with this scenario one way or the other in their place of work when organization employ random promotion technique in the promotion of staff while you felt cheated in the promotion method adopted. For example, a Bank may decide to promote 200 out of her 400 Executive trainees to Executive Assistants or 150 out of her 300 Executive Assistants to Assistant Banking Officers. The Bank will tell them that majority were qualified to be promoted but that they have a limited space for the positions.
As a staff, you believe your colleague should not be promoted ahead of you since you joined the Bank at the same time and you have met the promotion criteria as well. Whether a random promotion policy is justifiable in a real organization is a matter of concern. The fact remains that the policy would certainly kill any sense of ambition within a workforce, which could lead to demoralization. If you have experienced such practice, kindly share your experience so that people can learn and be educated on how to manage such situations.
I remember when I was at a branch of a commercial Bank some 5yrs ago, I was acting as the business development manager after our manager was redeployed to another Branch and he recommended me(not promotion but leadership responsibility) to the Zonal manager to take over from him at the Branch. We were two under him in marketing unit(though both of us on the same grade). I acted for a year and customers were already used to me as the manager with a special office in the Branch where I attend to them. Alas, after a year, the promotion list came out and my second colleague was promoted a grade above me despite the fact that both of us worked tirelessly to improve the ratings of the branch.
I thought to myself! this is a big shame. I was so depressed and unhappy. I had to vacate that office for my second colleague since she was now a step above me. When I got home, I narrated it to my parents and I cried so much that my Dad and Mum had to console, encourage and asked me to continue to pray. He told me probably it wasn't yet my time to be promoted but that I shouldn't be discouraged.
A year later, my own promotion also came and I gave thanks to God. I learnt two things.
1. No condition is permanent. Never overrate yourself because things can change over time.
2. Reward always come with hard work. It may tarry but will surely come sooner or later.
3. Work smartly. Many people work hard forgetting the fact that working smartly go hand in hand with hard work.

Thank you.
Sometimes, its not how far but how well.

I resigned from my job because of this. And thank God i did. Fully into my business now and never regretted leaving that job. THANK GOD it happened and i left. My business in on another level now.

Many workers use back-biting abd backstabbing to gain promotion. It happened to me last year, even though i was already planning my exit by January 2018. Gossips, Backbiting, lies, etc are what i hated.

They have now seen i didn't do most of the things they said. I am doing well in my business. Still maintaining my family's HMO in a big hospital in PH on private basis. God is faithful

Tayo and Kola joined a company together a few months after their graduation from university.

After a few years of work, their Manager promoted Tayi to a position of Senior Sales Manager, but Kola remained in his entry level Junior Sales Officer position.

Kola developed a sense of jealousy and disgruntlement, but continued working anyway.

One day Kola felt that he could not work with Tayo anymore. He wrote his resignation letter, but before he submitted it to the Manager, he complained that Management did not value hard working staff, but promoted only the favoured!

The Manager knew that Tayo worked very hard for the years he had spent at the company; even harder than Kola and therefore he deserved the promotion. So in order to help Kola to realize this, the Manager gave him a task.

“Go and find out if anyone is selling water melons in town?”

Kola returned and said, "yes there is someone!"

The Manager asked, "how much per kg?" Kola drove back to town to ask and then returned to inform the Manager; "they are N100.00 per kg!"

The Manager told Kola, "I will give Tayo the same task that I gave you. Please pay close attention to his response!"

So the Manager said to Tayo, in the presence of Kola; “Go and find out if anyone is selling water melons in town?”

Tayo went to find out and on his return he said:

"Manager, there is only one person selling water melons in the whole town.

The cost is N500.00 each water melon and N300,00 for a half melon. He sells them at N100.00 per kg when sliced. He has in his stock 93 melons, each one weighing about 7kg.

He has a farm and can supply us with melons for the next 4 months at a rate of 102 melons per day at N350.00 per melon; this includes delivery.

The melons appear fresh and red with good quality, and they taste better than the ones we sold last year.

He has his own slicing machine and is willing to slice for us free of charge.
We need to strike a deal with him before 10am tomorrow and we will be sure of beating last year's profits in melons by over N2,300,000.00.

This will contribute positively to our overall performance as it will add a minimum of 8.78% to our current overall sales target.

I have put this information down in writing and is available on spreadsheet. Please let me know if you need it as I can send it to you in fifteen minutes."

Kola was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Tayo. He decided not to resign but to learn from Tayo.

As we move in this second half of the year, let this story help us keep in mind the importance of going an Extra Mile in all our endeavors.

You won't be rewarded for doing what you're meant to do, you only get a salary for that! YOU'RE ONLY REWARDED FOR GOING AN EXTRA MILE; Performing Beyond Expectations.

To be Successful in Life, you must be Observant, Proactive and Willing to Do More, Think More, Have a More Holistic Perspective and Go Beyond The Call Of Duty.

May you be Blessed with a Better Perspective to do Your Work this year and beyond, Amen.

The Life ahead Needs This Mentality Of Going An Extra Mile.
