Was Obasanjo not an ex convict who was sentenced to death by Abacha?

Didn't he win the presidential seat in 1999?
Ex-President Obasanjo was not convicted by any court

*Take note that the military tribunal served as a court (or better still, it is a court) under the Abacha regime. *

An ex-convict cannot run for political office. She has been convicted of murder by competent courts and should go serve her sentence in peace.

A (illegal) military tribunal held in secret is not a competent court. He was at best a political prisoner

Like I stated, the military tribunal is a court and was a court under the Abacha regime. Hence it is on record that Obasanjo was an Ex-convict.

Whether the trial was done in secret or open doesn't stop it from acting like a court.

Recently the court wanted a secret trial for dasuki, does that make it illegal?

She being an ex convict doesn't stop her from contesting.

There have been several instances where ex convicts became presidents. Take note, most of them where not pardoned.

Obasanjo was sentenced by a military tribunal and he challenged it. Ibinabo Fiberesima drove a car while drunk and killed a medical Dr returning from working overnight. She bribed her way through and was initially found not guilty the Drs family took the case up to a higher court and she was found guilty. I hope you are not supporting "corruption". We need to say No to injustice and corruption and assist the govt else we will continue in this path, and tomorrow maybe the IG's son will use car and jam your loved one, then how would you feel if he wants to contest election after that Also, remember that El Mustapha that was accused of masterminding the murder of Kudirat Abiola is floating a party currently....

She was convicted for manslaughter not murder.

Even though the court of appeal upheld her conviction, she was still granted bail.

She is currently on bail. This is very funny and shows that with the right connection, you can dodge the long harm of the law.

If the supreme court upholds her conviction, na from court room to jail straight.

Oga, according to Nigerian laws, an Ex-convict cannot hold an elective post until after 10 years OR after being granted a presidential pardon.

He was pardoned doesn't mean he wasn't an Ex-convict.

Him being pardoned only terminated any punishment imposed on him for an offense.

That is not t he point of argument.

Mynd44 says because she is an Ex-convict she can't vie for a political position which I am correcting such impression.

Also take note that a bill was filled in 2010 seeking amendments to the constitution which will allow Ex-convict to contest for political positions without waiting for 10years.

It might have been approved without us knowing

Obasanjo was an ex-convict but was offered Presidential pardon by the outgoing Abdulsalami administration. That was the only basis upon which he could vie for office.

Even Lt General Diya wanted to run for public office -Presidency to be precise - but couldnt, because Obasanjo convinced Abdulsalami not to offer him Presidential pardon.

Heck dont believe anything I or any other person says here for that matter, just google it and you will see the result. Or best yet, google the legal question, "Can an ex-convict run for political office in Nigeria?".

Does giving someone presidential pardon wipe off the slate that the person was an Ex-convict? No.

Presidential pardon only stops the punishment given to the convicted and allows him/her to go free.

Google " was Obasanjo an Ex-convict " for more answers.

No. A pardon restores you to the position you were in before you committed the crime. That's the meaning of the Latin maxim I used.

A bill is first passed by both Senate and House of Rep before being sent to the president for assent. An important bill like that cannot be passed into law without a lot of people knowing.

Moreover, an Act of parliament is an inferior law to the constitution.

Like I said earlier, a presidential pardon only saves you from the punishment, it doesn't revoke the fact that he was an Ex-convict.

Here is what presidential pardon means, see the screenshot.
