I have been alive 22 years now and I have not met or heard of any Igbo person who is, was or is even remotly considering the possibilty of maybe some day thinking about trying to become muslim.

They are all converts and opportunists with the Igbo drive to succeed.
A criminal looking to swindle will become a shango worshipper if he has to.
I know several but I'll rather not name names.
They bear muslim names in the north and pretend but back home,we know them by their real names.

Back in the University of Ibadan in 2001, i knew a strict muslim guy. Long smoothly combed beard, skull cap, white kaftan with 'jump' trousers, and leather slippers. A real poster boy imam. Only for me to find out at graduation that this guy was Igbo. Biggest Shock of the year.

Outside the forum, a few years ago when I spent a few weeks with an aunt in Katsina, I knew of a few igbo guys who were Muslims. The thing is that religions are not limited or constrained to particular ethnic groups. In just the same way, before I became a Christian, I was somewhat surprised to find that there were many Hausas and Fulanis who were Christians.

Not true. Only very few hausas and fulanis are christians; they are not even up to 5%. please differentiate between hausas, fulanis and northerners in general. While all hausas and fulanis are northerners, not all northerners are hausas or fulanis.

Then I guess you know every one of the Hausas and Fulanis who are Christians? I didn't mistake them for Igbo or Yoruba - and I knew those referred to in my post.
Re: Any Igbo Muslims In The House? by ishmael(m): 12:03pm On Mar 16, 2007
yes we know them, some of them have been converted back to islam for fear of being killed.

First, please don't try and entertain yourself this morning by claiming you know every one of the Hausas and Fulanis who are Christians for argument's sake.

Second, while my rejoinders only sought to acknowledged the enquiry of the existence of Igbo Muslims, perhaps you're stretching it. Which would necessitate a question to the concern of why people have to live in fear against their own conscience? Is that not what many people have been querying all along - the fear that Islam brings so people are forced to convert? (see this link as well).

@all

Please lets not argue back and forth over the issue.

There are muslim Igbos but just that they are very few compared to Igbo christians. Part of the reason could be for the fact that some igbos have never been in close contact with Muslims.

I could remember when my brother went for service at Enugu. He told me that though they have mosque there but that the number of muslims are very few compared to christians. He travels far in order to observe the Jumah prayer every Fridays.

I still put it to you that only very few hausa-fulanis (less than 5%) are christians. You are making the mistake of calling all northerners hausa-fulani thats your problem; i'm correcting you so don't argue. Who and who do you even know are hausa-fulanis sef?? I have told you before that all hausa-fulanis are northerners, but not all northerners are hausa-fulani. I live in the north and i'm telling you the truth of the issue. We have many northern christians but they are not hausa-fulani please!! Do you call Birom and Lantang people in plateau state hausas?? Do you call the Jukuns in Taraba state hausas?? Do you call the Nupes in Niger state hausas?? Do you call the Gwaris in kaduna and Niger state hausas?? Do you call the kataf and kafanchan people in southern kaduna hausas?? Do you call the zurus in kebbi state hausas?? Do you call the marghi people in Borno/Adamawa state hausas?? Hausas are from the core northern states like Kano state, Jigawa state, Yobe state, Zamfara state, sokoto state, zaria in the northern part of kaduna state and etc. and they have less than 5% indigenes that are christians. Find out for yourself if you care.
Re: Any Igbo Muslims In The House? by Nobody: 2:43pm On Mar 16, 2007
an excerpt.

Another Igbo Muslim, Alhaji Obi Ike, embraced the Islamic religion in order to “play them 419.” A former practicing Catholic, he became a Moslem and went on pilgrimage to Mecca in 1977, because he wanted to use his new religion to break into the Nigerian power structure, which is historically dominated by Moslems. Married to a woman from the Caliphate, he gained prominence in the Shagari administration, especially during the Sharia debate in the 1980’s. His marriage opened doors for him: He was awarded several contracts, which furnished him with resources to build and own hotels across the country.

@babyosis,

Here you go again. Are you saying there are no Ibo muslims? I can remember two Ibo muslims at Lagos Island, Marina precisely. I never knew that they were Ibo until I heard their names and also saw them speaking Igbo. It sounded somehow seeing Ibo muslims in the midst of Yorubas. I moved closer and enquired from one of them and I was told that he was an Ibo by birth.

So babyosis, Its not that there are no Ibo muslims but they are very few. Also are you trying to say that Ibo become muslims in order to have political power. If you are saying that, what of Ibos that are in the East and do their business there without coming or going to Hausa States? Do you say they are also interested in political seats?

@Ishmael

Please take it easy.

Please take it easy.

I said that I know no Igbo Muslims that are born Muslims.
But I know a few that "became Muslims" to gain appointments and get scholarships.
The excerpt above was not my writing.
Don't put words in my mouth dear.

Thanks for your rambling. If you care to carefully read posts, I never said that all northerners are "hausa-fulani" - and that was your problem and not mine. I only stated this:

shahan:

before I became a Christian, I was somewhat surprised to find that there were many Hausas and Fulanis who were Christians.

Read it yet again: "many Hausa and Fulani". . . not "all northerners are hausa-fulani" as you alleged. And if you ever cared to to read my posts, you would have no need for your drivel.

I'm still trying to understand something about the use of pictures in Islam. I know that Muslims in general take different views on this subject; but even so, I wonder how Muslims who take pictures today would interpret the idea that pictures are discouraged in Islam?

There was an ardent Muslim that became a Christian here in the USA and he says the 2 greatest regrets he had were

1.Not knowing about Christ sooner.

2.Not having any child pictures of his beautiful children because true Islam forbade it.

Honestly, I've heard some Muslim (still Muslim and not yet converted) friends who have expressed the same regret. Even when I was a Muslim, I could not quite explicate the basis for that; and only later did I come to the surprising fact that not all Muslims are agreed to the Islamic persuasion about pictures.

Well, there.

i was only trying to point out to you that the real hausa-fulanis are predominantly muslims, only a few of them ( less than 5%) are christians. Most northern christians in the north are not hausa-fulani, they come from minority tribes in the north and i think they are even more in number than the real hausa-fulani people. I'm not trying to ridicule you. Cheers!!

Guys and Gals, why drag this topic, you never can say never in any situation. Just as there are christians in Saudi Arabia, Afganisthan, Iraq, Iran, etc, etc, there should be no reason why there can't be Igbo muslims in Nigeria, unless we are just beign myopic or shortsighted, infact we need not to look far; check out the profile of this illustrious, learned, and notable member of the house of representative from his website, and look out for religion.http://www.nednwoko.com/resume.html QED
