Petroleum products such as Premium motor spirit(PMS), Dual purpose kerosene(DPK), Automobile fuel oil (AGO),  are often transported in tankers to customers' sales point in most countries. These products are highly inflammable and their transportation through tankers has caused great loss which includes destruction of properties and loss of lives especially when they are involved in accident. During accident the spilled flammable product easily go into flame, engulfing  anything close by, which may  includes cars, houses, human beings etc

The following steps can aid in minimizing fuel delivery truck hazard;

1.Transport Petroleum products through pipeline for long distances.

This will limit the use of truck for shorter distance movement of petroleum products such as from closer depots to fueling station. Reducing the distance traveled will reduce the rate of tanker usage and a reduction in the accident rate.

2.Ensure the vehicles are in good condition.

Most of these accident are caused by faulty vehicles. Considering the large load being carried, such truck need to be certified fit for such job. There should be plan for routine checks and maintenance which should be observed strictly.

3.Speed control.

Heavy duty vehicles such as the petroleum tankers are restricted to lower speed limit. It is common to see some drivers flouting these speed limit, which has caused accident sometimes. vehicle speed limiter should be installed in tankers to hinder the drivers from exceeding speed limit. This will reduce the impart of fuel delivery truck hazard.

3.Training and retraining of drivers;

The role of the driver is highly important in road traffic safety. An unskilled driver is an hazard on the high way. Those engaged in driving these trucks should be given special training on defensive driving techniques. There should be plan in monitory driver performance and provision for retraining especially those with poor driving records.
