No, it is not compulsory, but it is necessary for a student to have a background knowledge of Further Mathematics which will help him/her in the higher institution since the mathematics studied in the University is much similar to Further Maths.

Yes you will met some further mathematics you studied in secondary school in the uniuversities.Not just for Engineering students but also for other sceience students.About from applied mathematics 1 and 2.Engineering students also go through engineering mathematics.Thankfully K.A Stroud has made engineering mathematics very easy.
