Senator Jonah Jang has been sent to prison by a Plateau state high court on Wednesday, May 16
Jonah Jang, former plateau state governor was imprisoned alongside Yusuf Pam, a former government official in the state on Wednesday, May 16.
The Cable reports that the duo was accused of misappropriating N6.3 billion while serving in the state.
Robert Clark who is the counsel to the accused had asked that they be granted bail on self-recognition but the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) asked the court to consider the gravity of the situation.
"Any offence that exceeds three years should not be treated as ordinary and presumable for bail.”
Justice Daniel Longji in his reaction said he would need more time to study the argument put forward by the two parties.
He asked that the two accused be remanded in prison pending the adjourned date of May 24 for ruling on the bail application.
He said: “There is a situation here where the Law becomes an axe. I have not studied the charges and I cannot use my personal knowledge of the accused persons to ask him to go on bail. They should be remanded in prison pending the ruling on his bail on Thursday next week.”
AB Blog, earlier reported that just after Justice Daniel Longji of the state high court five fixed Wednesday, May 15, for proper arraignment and hearing for bail application, young loyalists to Jang, began serious protest against what they referred to as a “witch hunt” by the All Progressives Congress’s led administration.
The youths carried placards that read: ‘Baba Jang is our hero, he didn’t steal a kobo’ and ‘Jang Forever’ as they chanted solidarity songs along CBN road.
In contrast to this, another group of youths also took over the streets with placards on which was written: “Jang return our money” and “where is the N2bn CBN/SME fund you collected
