Nigeria's John Obi Mikel Out Of World Cup 2010 With Knee Injury

John Obi Mikel has ruled himself out of the World Cup amidst fears over his long-term recovery from knee surgery.

In what is starting to be seen as a World Cup hoodoo for Chelsea players he joins Germany and Ghana internationals Michael Ballack and Michael Essien on the sidelines for this tournament.

Didier Drogba’s participation in the tournament is also in doubt after he fractured his arm in a 2-0 victory for the Ivory Coast in a warm-up match over Japan.

Teammate Kolo Toure initially said the striker told him his World Cup was over, although a team official later played down the comments.

Such is Chelsea’s strength in depth that the Blues were able to clinch the Premier League and FA Cup double without the 23-year-old Mikel in the finishing stages of last season.

The player hoped that surgery on a knee injury would grant him a clean bill of health in time for the World Cup but despite being named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad it was announced this morning that he won’t play.

Team official Emmanuel Attah said this morning: "We have dropped Mikel from the World Cup squad after he told the team he did not want to put his career at risk as his knee injury has yet to fully heal after a recent surgery."

The only consolation for Nigeria is that – like England with the Rio Ferdinand injury situation – Mikel can still be replaced by one of the seven players dropped from Lars Lagerback's initial 30-man World Cup squad.

Sochaux midfielder Brown Ideye has been called up to replace John Mikel Obi, who has been ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle problem

"Mikel suffered a bruise to his ankle and a scan showed that he will not recover on time," Media Officer Idah Peterside told KickOffNigeria.com.

"The coach has now decided to call up Brown Ideye to replace him."

Mikel had knee surgery last month to repair a torn meniscus and was expected to be out for two weeks.

He was left out of Nigeria's friendly match against Colombia by coach Lars Lagerback, who explained that the move was only precautionary and trained with the rest of the squad on Friday.

Mikel has suddenly developed cold feet; it appears there is a curse on these players by the chelsea management. Drogba too has been ruled out of the world cup.

@MUNEER2, All that 1 na camouflag.

Just lyke my post above ur's earlier, 90munites will do the judging and not names.

with the lykes of Henry, Anelka, Govou, Ribery, Gallas, Evra (captain), Abidal etc. they still lost to low rated china 1-0

If Nigeria plays a disciplined game, we should beat Argentina. The final of the Olympics a few years back under Siasia was a match we should have won if Osaze, Promise, Anichebe and Obinna had their scoring boots on. I think we should adopt the same strategy of containing the Argentines and hitting them on a counter and hope this time the strikers will not think they are playing rugby!

Replacing a midfielder with a striker. This is definitely not a smart move by largerback.

The last thing we need right now is another striker. what happened to Rabiu Ibrahim. Is he injured. that seems like the only reasonable

explanation for larger's decision to pick Ideye (a striker) ahead of our BEST attacking midfielder, as Mikel's replacement.

German Referee For Nigeria/Argentina Clash

Posted: 2010-06-05 21:48

Germany's Wofgang Stark will be at the centre for Nigeria's opening World Cup match against Argentina in Johannesburg.

Stark, who has refereed UEFA Champions League matches and European qualification games, will be assisted by fellow Germans Assistant Jan-Hendrick Salver and Mike Pickel.

Saudi Arabia's Khalil Al Ghamdi will be the fourth official while Iran's Hassan Kamranifar is the reserve assistant referee.

Stark is notoriously remembered for a contentious quarter-final game between Chile and Argentina at the 2007 World Youth Championships were he issued nine yellow cards, and two red cards.

Seven of the yellows and both the red cards went to the Chileans in a game in which he called 53 fouls, 30 against Chile.

At full time, Stark and his assistants were hunted down by incensed Chile players, who had to be restrained by police and the referees were escorted off the pitch by officers.

Nigeria has NO chance to beat Argentina. Who will mark Messi? I just hope they can keep the score under 4-0. undecided
Re: Nigeria Vs Argentina: [0 - 1] On June 12, 2010 @ World Cup by 12large: 5:36pm On Jun 07, 2010
all i know is that there should be no yobo against argentina, haruna lukman should definetly not play center midfield he should play attacking midfield. if lukman plays center midfield against argentina then it is a guranteed at least 2freekicks. we should remember that we really don't have to win this game we should not concede thats our aim. against korea and greece attacking 442 formation would be too much for them
