Relax, don't be timid. This is not a club match, and don't be deceived by the big names. Nigeria, all the way. |

The way pple are going on about this argentina match one would be forgiven if he thinks Nigeria is just going to play only Argentina and return the next day! Even if we lose that match there are still two others to come so lets stop obsessing about names. Mind you their coach is useless so all the big names may be of no benefit. I remember in 2002 when we all believed Argentina with Batistuta and co would demolish the eagles but it ended in a tight 1 nil win for them and they joined us on the plane home after the first round despite being pre-tournament favorites. My firm belief is that even if the eagles lose the game they will not be disgraced and it will be another close run thing as usual. We have not lost by more than a goal to them. They would also be cautious about playing Nigeria and opening game nerves will affect both teams. So you doomsday prophets should put your emotions in check please. |

No need to panic. J. Goodluck had sent a message to the Argentine president to implore his team to temper justice with Messi on us. |

For all the people who are overly fixated on Argentine's array of stars, they need to watch the highlight of the France v. China international friendly. China defeated France 1-0, despite France's star studded line up. The era when teams who feature "big names" intimidate teams with "small names" is over, and moreover, it's not like the Nigerian team lacks its own stars, although admittedly, the Argentine team has more recognized names than the Nigerian team. Even said, anyone who is tactical will know that the Argentine team is not cohesive, and they rely heavily on the individualized ingenuity of Messi, which is not good if Messi has an off-day or is injured. But soccer is great because (1) it is a sport that rewards fitness and teamwork and discipline, all of which are more important than featuring some so called individual stars, and (2) on any given day, anybody can beat anybody, just as China beat France. Relax guys France v. China lengthy friendly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0IkLQhn7Aw |

Re: Nigeria Vs Argentina: [0 - 1] On June 12, 2010 @ World Cup by seunspice(m): 1:29pm On Jun 08, 2010 |
We all shiver when we hear Argentina because our brains interprete Argentina to be Messi + Tevez + Higuain + Aguero + Others. For me its simply dejavu. This was where we were in France 98 against Spain and we were outplayed but won. There is nothing the Naija spirit can't achieve, the problem is the Naija spirit is mostly never seen in positive ventures. However, if there is any match the Eagles would perform well in it is this match. The Messi fans would be in for a thrill because he would score his usual goal against Nija but Argentina would NOT WIN that match. I see all the equations being quadratically balanced in Naija's favour. |

Pls use national team stats not club stats. My sentiment exactly. I think watching too much football on cable (Hitv and Dstv) these days is damaging the psyche of the average Nigerian football supporters. The truth is that I fear the English and Italians more than I fear the Argies. Football is a team sport not individual sport, they are not a better team though I give it that they have better individual players. |

Honestly, Nigerians, all i have is one question: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Majority of us keep on being soooo negative about our boys at the world cup; so lightning-quick to point out the weak points of the team, praising and demonising players in the blindness of our own sentiments, and even exalting Messi, Tevez &co to high heavens - as if they're the gods of Olympus and Atlantis combined, and not mere humans! True, the SE's preparations for the mundial haven't been ideal, but this is no time to mentally and emotionally abandon the team when they need us the most. And as for we as nigerians, 'tis not that we lose and get disappointed - it's that most of are not emotionally prepared to bounce back from disappointment when it comes (and it does come - it's part of life), and so we turn temporary disappointments into permanent liability - hence the easy bent towards pessimism!! In short, the way we watch football shows me that Nigerians are major cowards; the Eagles haven't gone into battle yet and already hardline pessimists are siding argentina - cowardice portrayed as "reality" . Honestly, with this fear-fear attitude, i say, if all of us were alive in Moses' day, the story would've been the same as with the Israelites: majority of us would not enter the promised land - we'd be scared stiff! Well, the odds may be against us, but the courageous are those who stand nonetheless. I choose courage, and i say - BRING ON THE ARGIES!! If we win, GREEEEAAAAT; & if we lose - no shame ! UP EAGLES!!!!!! |

Re: Nigeria Vs Argentina: [0 - 1] On June 12, 2010 @ World Cup by Nobody: 8:30pm On Jun 08, 2010 |
Nigeria has been up against Lionel Messi twice and on both situations he was kept largely silent, we conctrolled the game but was unlucky. I doubt we will be third time unlucky. We also have a history with Argentina and I don't believe they scare us anymore except we get our tactics wrong or our players get shy on the pitch. Italia 90, exactly 20years ago. Cameroun shocked the world by beating Argentina in their opening match by 1 - 0. This could be a repeat of that experience if we play our cards right. BTW Diego Armando Maradona, Burruchaga, Caniggia were all in the match. Every football coach who know their onions know how to smoother Messi. Siasia did it in 2008 by preventing Riquelme and Mascherano from playing, Mourinho did it this year by preventing Xavi and Sergio Busquets from playing. The fact is that when you prevent the deep lying playmakers; in any side Messi is playing for from playing you succeed in cutting out comfortable ground passes coming to Messi. When you do this his team resorts to long balls from the defence to attack in which Messi is useless at given his height. With this instruction in place all you need is for every player on the field closest to Messi to close down on him immediately he manages to get the ball but before he is able to settle down and ochestrate things. That way he will be kept at bay, frustrated and an indicator of when he is being frustrated is when you see Messi running into his own half to pick up the ball. So in a nutshell the way to mark Messi is for our attacking players to prevent especially Veron or Mascherano from seeing the ball or being able to do anything with it. |

The Argentine Defence is slow and they have a make shift right back in Gutierez. Honestly if we don't get at least a draw from these guys it will simply be because we did not turn up or rise to the occasion. |

@chinaaman. There are prophets of doom and i hope you are not one of them. The scripture says that, in the last day, many false prophets will arise even in football. let us wait and see. |
