How Do You Define A Nigerian? by meyri: 4:30pm On May 28, 2010 |
I was having this conversation with my cousin on whether she is considered a Nigerian or not. She was born and raise in the States to Nigerian parents. Doesn't speak their language neither has she been to Nigeria. To her when a Nigerian asks her where is she from? She considers it a trick question. If she says she is American or from America they will say she denying what/where her parents are/are from. If she says she from Nigeria, they question her ability to speak her parents language and the fact that she never been to Nigeria. So they will call her a typical American. To me if both parent are Nigerian then you Nigerian regardless if you have not been there or don't speak the languages. Yet where you were born and raise is where you are from. Agree? If you are a product of two Nigerian parents yet you were born and raise outside of Nigeria are you Nigerian? If you are a product of two Nigerian parents and born outside of Naija are you from Nigeria or from wherever you were born. |

Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Chapter III Citizenship 25. (1) The following persons are citizens of Nigeria by birth-namely- (a) every person born in Nigeria before the date of independence, either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents belongs or belonged to a community indigenous to Nigeria; Provided that a person shall not become a citizen of Nigeria by virtue of this section if neither of his parents nor any of his grandparents was born in Nigeria. (b) every person born in Nigeria after the date of independence either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents is a citizen of Nigeria; and (c) every person born outside Nigeria either of whose parents is a citizen of Nigeria. (2) In this section, "the date of independence" means the 1st day of October 1960. |

I believe that it all comes down to 2 ways of defining where a person comes from. - What that person feels most like (a citizen of his country of origin or where she/he grew up in) - What the person is legally considered to be (passport) I was born and raised in Nigeria for a good 10 years then we moved to France. Since then I've been living in France. Nonetheless, I feel more Nigerian than French. But when I came back to Naija for the holidays I was told that I behave and look nothing like a "typical" Nigerian - oh, and I cannot understand/speak Ibo (my mum) nor Yoruba (pops), so I guess that doesn't help. So yeah, technically I am Nigerian (passport), I feel more Nigerian than French (upbringing, values) but apparently I don't have the Nigerian mentality. I hope that somehow helped, OP. |

jasine: No American Nigerian, this is simple common sense. E.g. I was born a bred in UK, Been going back home since the age of 5 and from the age of 15 started going back home on my own without my Dads supervision. Understand and able to speak my language to a certain degree When people ask where I am from I say I am Nigerian. However, I am British Nigerian, simple. |

Some people are not proud to be a Nigerian even if he/she was born here staying abroad, i have a female friend who has British passport she was born here and her parents live in Nigeria. The simple answer is she can be a Nigerian or an american its up to him/her. |
