Australian Police Uncover Nigerian Polymer Scandal Link - Sanusi Vindicated by nduchucks: 8:13pm On May 30, 2010
Late last year the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, called on the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to explain why its bank-note firm's dealings with Nigeria involved multimillion-dollar payments to offshore tax havens. Sanusi described as "disturbing" the revelation that more than N1.5bn ($10m) in commissions were wired to accounts - including some in secretive tax havens - by the RBA's bank-note firm, Securency.

Many Sanusi critics including the usual suspects of NL, accused Sanusi of another implied smear campaign, designed to diss his predecessor Soludo.  If indeed Sanusi's allegations were true, Soludo couldn not claim to have been ignorant of the affair since he was privy to the same information at Sanusi's disposal.

Well, 234next is now reporting the following:

Excerp

In Australia, new facts are emerging to implicate top Nigerian Central Bank officials in the polymer banknotes bribery scandal. But in Nigeria, relevant authorities remain clueless after an eight month long investigation.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP), last week, uncovered a diary that records that “top government officials and top CBN officials” were paid money in bribes by Securency International Pty Limited through their agents, in order to secure the polymer bank note contract.

In 2007, Securency, an Australian banknote company, part owned by the Reserve Bank of Australia(RBA), secured a contract to supply polymer materials on which Nigeria currently prints four of its banknotes; a contract which has led to the supply of at least 1.9 billion pieces of the polymer substrate. In October 2009, NEXT exclusively reported in Nigeria that the plum contract was only got after bribes were paid to senior government officials as well as relevant CBN officials. The negotiations for the contract may have begun as far back as 2004, when the CBN began a series of currency reforms.
