Akwa Ibom FDI Next To Lagos - Gov Udom Emmanuel by HappyNigerian: 10:03am On Jun 06, 2018

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanual on Tuesday revealed that the Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) of his state is second to Lagos state among other states of the federation.

The Governor stated this in Lagos during an interactive session with journalists, noted that his administration has succeeded in boosting the economic prosperity of the state to compete with other economies like Lagos rated as the fifth largest economy in Africa.

He explained that presently in Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State is leading the train of state governors who are bold enough and are armed with the economic and intellectual wizardry to woo and convince foreign investors to partner state governments to invest in their states, especially during biting recession period.

Emmanuel said, “One interesting thing to note is not exploring Public Private Partnership (PPP) only for the purpose of basic infrastructural development, but to draft and propose viable business and industrial ventures loaded with benefits to the two parties, chief of which is employment generation for the state.

“For example, many have continued to wonder about the miracle behind Governor Udom Emmanuel’s government’s ability to create jobs and economic prosperity through the establishment and operation of one revamped and five brand new manufacturing industries in Akwa Ibom state within three years, even at a period of seemingly unfavourable economic climate in the country.’’

The Governor said that many Nigerians are still amazed about the syringe manufacturing company, the electric meter manufacturing company, the toothpick and pencil manufacturing factory and the Akwa Prime Poultry and Hatchery Industries, all brand new business ventures conceived, built, commissioned and producing less than three years of Gov. Udom Emmanuel’s tenure.

The governor said he decided to promote economic development through participatory, coherent and coordinated economic policies.

‘’This, of course, has been the quality that stands the state and its governor out in good stead and sets him apart from his contemporaries. It is also the reason Akwa Ibom people are reaping hugely from his investment drive.’’

Emmanuel added that, ‘’His government has pursued this with vigour and achieved the licensing of the upgraded Ibom Power from 190mw to 685mw. The import of this is that with the phase two of the Ibom power plant project hitting 685mw, the state government’s industrialisation policy is backed with adequate provision of power.

‘’Taking it together, the implication is that the Ikot Abasi axis of the state is open for industrial and agro parks with capacity to generate, and deliver to the people, up to 5,000 jobs.’’

Power supply has improved. Daily power supply averaging at 12 hours in areas connected to the power grid is probably the highest in the country. Some areas even get uninterrupted electric power supply for days at length, which is praiseworthy.

Road infrastructures have continued towing the path of the Akpabio vision. He gets a pass mark for that too.

Still he needs to hasten his industrialization strides. There are several companies which need to be revived. ALSCON is one of such.
Companies in Itu whose machineries are in disrepair need urgent attention.

And he needs to tone down his bickering with Nsima Ekere, the NDDC Chairman. Both are doing well for the state and shouldn't hinder the other from playing his part to further develop her.

You are right!

Udom has done excellently well and if you asked me, his strides in industrialisation set him apart from Akpabio

Good that you have acknowledged Udom's stride. As for Nsima Ekere (NDDC MD I think), the dude has been using his federal position to try to undermine Udom and stuff.

Ekere should be the one to leave Udom alone

Good!

FDI is like pouring seed into the ground, it takes time to germinate into fruits good for eating.

Ogun used to be the highest in FDI at some point but it never meant it was a paradise compared to Lagos.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom state has started experiencing the boom and all these in meagre 3 years of Udom Emmanuel.

Everyone who's in the know about the happenings in Akwa Ibom State would attest to Udom Emmanuel's positive thinking.

The man seems obsessed with electrification and commissions power substations every alternate month.

Trump and Kim might implode everything and start a world war, Putin might wipe off half of Ukraine to claim its territory...but one thing is certain; when you arrive in Akwa Ibom, you'd be sure to go to bed with your electric bulbs on. Even the opposition parties in the state have grudgingly admitted that.

Oddly, I don't think Nsima Ekere of the NDDC is undermining Udom's power. The rivalry (when it doesn't get violent) has been good news for Akwa-Ibomites.

The rivalry with Udom is probably one reason why Nsima Ekere is determined to outperform his NDDC predecessors.

He's tarred and widened inner city roads and streets in Uyo, built entirely new roads in Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi, Oron and Ibiono Ibom L.G.As amongst countless others. He's footed the medical bills of so many others too.

The fact is, at the basic level, Akwa-Ibomites aren't really interested who wins the PDP-APC rivalry as long as good governance is ensured, as long as it opens up more opportunities for us and further cements our place at the top, we'd go with it.
It's the reason why everyone supported Senators Udo Udoma and Ita Enang when Buhari appointed them, PDP and APC alike. It's the reason why we all cheered when Nsima Ekere was appointed as the NDDC Director-General and when Eng. Ben Ukpong was appointed as one of the six NPC Federal Commissioners.

It might come off as odd that we do not necessarily have to draw our political elites back based on their party affiliations but I have explained why.

If I had my way, the rivalry between Udom Emmanuel and Nsima Ekere would continue for years with both sitting atop powerful 'thrones'. Their rivalry has benefitted the state and if they keep going at it at the current rate, every state in the country would be trailing Akwa Ibom developmentally.

Luckily, on the whole, the PDP governors Akwa Ibom State has produced haven't been failures.

That storied achievement would always give the PDP the upper hand in Akwa Ibom State politics, always.

Developmentally the rivalry appears healthy but Nsima Ekere people should stop demarketing Akwa Ibom state.

Udom has done impressively well and I think that is undisputable
