Drinking wine is not sin but getting drunk is. Even our Lord Jesus drank wine ,in fact his first miracle was the turning of water into wine. The key word is moderation |

This has been one of the controversial topic in the bible, which i have tried to search for the real truth. The only place i found in the bible that directly warn against wine and strong drink was in the book of Judges 13:4 and Judges 13:14 and this warning was directly by and to a single person, a pregnant woman, the mother of Sampson I guess. Another Important place bible gave a warning about wine is in Ephesians 5:17-19 (King James Version) Like some some people have already said, Drink wine is not a sin but the excess of it or getting drunk of wine. We can see the evil outcome of being drunk of wine in the new testament. Noah cursed a whole generation of his son out of drunkenness, Lot sleep with his 2 daughters out of drunkenness. I understand why some churches make as a doctrine, but not a sin, becoz many cannot determine the quantity intake where by they can get drunk, which might lead them into sin. So is better to stay away from it, just as Jesus said if you left hand will lead you into sin(hell fire) you better cut it off. So if you cant drink you better don't drink at all so that it will not lead you into sin. |

Did not jesus turn water into wine during a wedding party. Didn't paul tell timothy to take wine for the sake for his stomach. Nothin wrong with alcohol . Along as it done in moderation. |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by Krayola(m): 2:37am On Jun 01, 2010 |
So are we allowed to do only things that the Bible explicitly endorses . . and forbidden to do things that the bible explicitly condemns? As in a straight up follow the instruction manual and never use your damn brain type thing . . Say I was locked out of my house and really needed to take a dump. Would doing it on my neighbors lawn send me to hell? Let's say i dont have a lawn, and i only dropped one lump and held the rest in . . so it was in moderation. |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by 912(m): 7:05am On Jun 01, 2010 |
Krayola:Very funny I guess you will be glad if all your neighbours that are unable to get into their houses to take a dump come and do it at your door step. You wouldn't like that would you? That's where "do unto others as you wish them to do unto you" comes in. So my brother, I think that your argument doesn't hold water. |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by FMK(m): 7:05am On Jun 01, 2010 |
the bible is not the refernce if you want to sin Drinking or not drinking is firstly human desire even you said that bible does not condamn this action but depends on you to choose what is Good for you. specially this question often comes from no christians side or christians but bound to this world desires . even the church says drink but in Good manner no one will accept to just drink only one glass and say that is all you can see why other religions say that drinking is sin |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by 912(m): 7:23am On Jun 01, 2010 |
FMK:The bolded is very incorrect. I have some friends who do not drink beer and they don't take more than a glass of wine when ever they come visiting. So that's also not true. Also, not all religions condemn drinking some are silent about it. Sometimes its the views of the teachers of the religion we advocate when we say do not drink, not the views of the religion itself. |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by princekevo(m): 8:32am On Jun 01, 2010 |
Krayola:I don't understand what your meant by this, can you explain pls? 9-11:Exactly what am talking abt I believe God deal with us individually and not collectively. That some people drink and get drunk, start misbehaving does not mean it should be generalised as sin. The manifestation of it is what matters. Some people get drunk, which might lead them into sin and i drink to relax at home before going to sleep. It is 2 different issues here. That is why the book of Proverbs 20:1 says Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Underline whoever is deceived thereby is not wise. It did not say whoever taketh it. So for some people to let wine or strong drink deceive them does make it general sin. I do not advice people to drink anyways becoz is very difficult to maintain the limitation that is why i mostly drink at home. That is also why some wise governments places high tax on Alcohols to limit its citizen from the intake. |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by 912(m): 10:22am On Jun 01, 2010 |
princekevo:lol How come I never saw that part before. I think I'm inclined to agree with you as it is clear that the bible did not outrightly condemn the drinking of alcohol it only advocates moderation of it. Some biblical references to back this up are: "Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in sin assemblies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy." (Romans 13:13) "But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat." (1 Corinthians 5:11) "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male love-peddlers nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, sin assemblies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21) "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:18) "For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, sin assemblies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead." (1 Peter 4:3-5) My suggestion would be that if you are a Christian who drinks alcohol, consider examining your motives carefully. Why do you drink? Is it so that you will "fit in" with the worldly people around you? If so then you may need to check yourself Do you drink alcohol for the feeling it gives you? If so, that "feeling" means that the alcohol is affecting you, and therefore your body has reached the beginning stages of drunkenness and the habit needs to be checked |
Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by fredo648: 10:52am On Jun 01, 2010 |
Iwish thank all for your wonderful contributions. I can now confirm that Scripture did no condemn Alcohol drinking but with moderation. But where you cannot control yourself better abstain. But as one who do not take alcohol, can you give your visitor/Friend alcohol or is it a sin to give someone what you do not eat? |

Re: Is Alcohol A Sin? by princekevo(m): 12:27pm On Jun 01, 2010 |
fredo648: I guess you dont eat frog man, will it be a sin to prepared a frog to a Chinese visitor who visited your house? The answer is no. Where by you have no brewery in you house i wonder how a visitor can come to your house and get himself drunk. Meanwhile you can only offer what you have. If your do not drink alcohol i don't expect you to have one at home. Whereby u have non you offer what u have(juice/water/soda/ and if you any at home i see nothing wrong in serving your visitor with one even if you don't take it. |
