The managing director of Ibom Power Company Limited (IPCL) has shed more lights on why Akwa Ibom does not have 24-hour power supply.
Mr Meyen Etukudo, in a radio interview in Uyo, said the problem was caused by the inability of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) to ‘pick’ all the power produced by Ibom Power Plant with 191megawatts installed capacity.
Etukudo, an engineer, who is also the special assistant on power to Gov Udom Emmanuel, said the 115mw available capacity at Ibom Power Plant is sufficient to give Akwa Ibom 24-hour power supply if the entire load is picked and distributed by PHEDC.
He said according to the data available to him as at the time of the radio interview, Ibom Power was producing 96mw but PHEDC did not pick up to 20 per cent of the 96mw produced by Ibom Power Plant Monday.
“This is the reason even when Ibom power is producing every day, parts of the state still complain of not having power supply, the distribution company is not picking the load from Ibom Power,” he said.
He explained further that the Nigerian Power sector is a value chain where the operators are licensed entities. Gas producers supply gas to power generating companies (GENCOs), the energy produced is wheeled by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the distribution companies (Discos) get it to the final consumers.
Addressing the call for withdrawal of licence from erring discos, Etukudo said it was the prerogative of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) which is the Federal Government body responsible for the regulation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
On decentralization of the power sector to enable states generate and distribute their own power, Etukudo said decentralization may solve a larger percentage of the issues in the sector, adding that the Akwa Ibom government under Gov Udom Emmanuel has been intervening in power distribution across the state.
“The governor commissioned a 33/11kV, 2 x 15MVA injection substation at Four Lane, which has improved power distribution in parts of Uyo; he is about to commission a similar 33/11kV, 2 x 15MVA injection substation at the Ibom International Airport that will equally improve power supply in that axis”.
“This is in addition to the over 400 distribution transformers deployed to over 2,200 gazetted villages in the state. These interventions ought to be done by the distribution company, PHEDC but Akwa Ibom government has been doing it,” Etukudo said.
He added that the governor in partnership with TCN will soon commission a 132kV transmission substation at Ekim which will ensure steady and quality power supply to five local government councils and the industries sited in that axis.
The governor’s aide said his office receives about 20 requests for transformers weekly and the government has been providing communities with transformers to relieve overloaded transformers or replace vandalized ones which ought to be the responsibility of PHEDC because they collect the bills.
He said meters would be provided to Akwa Ibom households under the “Power for All” initiative of the governor and that Akwa Ibom was already working on a bill to criminalize energy theft and vandalism. Etukudo urged electricity consumers to forward their power – related complaints to NERC which is the appropriate body to call Discos to order.

See dis man. undecided Mbok, Instead of you to thank God for the proactive governors you have had till date, who have invested massively in creating good infrastructure for your state, you are here lamenting about small issues. Ok, at least you have a stadium, airport, power plant and roads, whereas there are some states that have nothing compared to what you have. What do you want people of Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa and Kwara state to say? shocked Do you want them to cry or lament about their ill luck, in being blessed with clueless governors that cannot add any form of value to their citizens, or their state?
