EPISODE: EPISODE 12


“Gently please” Gabriel said to Nkechi as she
helped him leave the scene. Queen stood still at
the spot staring at them as they walked away, she
had tears in her eyes but she quickly wipe them
off before they fell from her eyes. “I didn’t mean
it” She said to herself. “Who asked you guys to
beat him up?” She shouted angrily, she was asking
no one in particular. She stared at the spot for
bout some minutes before walking away, she
didn’t go back to the ATM queue, she went directly
to her hostel.


“Gently” Nkechi said to Gabriel as she helped him
into a Tricycle, he found it difficult to enter into it
because of the pain he was feeling all over. The
driver to the Tricycle drove gently as Nkechi had
instructed him to, he also had to drive gently
because of the badly injured guy. They finally got
to his junction and like they had entered, they
alighted gently. She led Gabriel to his house which
was the second in the street.


“Jesus Christ, Israel” she shouted immediately she
got into his room, Israel sprang up from the bed
immediately he saw how badly injured Gabriel
was, “What happened to him?” he asked angrily
like he was ready to beat up whosoever had done
it to Gabriel. “He was beaten up by some boys,
they thought he was a thief” Nkechi explained as
she helped Gabriel to the bed. “Gabriel what really
happened?” Israel asked Gabriel, “That foolish girl
that accused me of sleeping with her did this to
me” he said, “Hmm, do you need to go to the
hospital?” Israel asked him but Gabriel shook his
head negatively, “I will be fine” he said. “Nkechi,
how are you now?” Israel asked hugging Nkechi
briefly, “We thank God o, just take a look at you”
She smiled checking him out, “You have grown o”
she complemented and he laughed, “Look at who
is talking, you have over grown all round, both in
the front and back aspect” Israel said and they
both bursted into laughter, even Gabriel smiled.
“Israel, you still haven’t changed bah?” she asked
him in between her laughter, “I can’t believe this is
the same Nkechi I know” Israel said turning her
around and looking closely at her. “Oh, am
blushing” she said and they laughed again.


“Forgive me dear, please sit down” Israel told her
and she sat on one of the reading chairs in the
room. “So tell me, how has your life been?” He
asked her.


Queen barged angrily into her lodge, some of her
roommates were around and they were sure
surprised the way she came in. “Queen what is it?”
One of the girls asked her, “Just let me be” Queen
shouted her down and laid facing thr other side of
her bed. “Am sorry” she murmured to herself like
she was apologizing to someone she was seeing,
she soon drifted to sleep with tears in her eyes.
“Israel please leave me alone, stop flattering me”
Nkechi laughed and hit Israel playfully. “Am
serious now, look at your back and front, all set”
Israel laughed and Nkechi laughed the more,
Gabriel was sleeping now. “Hope you don’t have
any class?” Israel asked her, “I have classes this
morning but I have to stay here because of Gabi”
she said and Israel gave her a kind of funny eye,
“You guys want to bring your secondary school
love down to the University bah?” he asked but
Nkechi didn’t answer him. They talked for about
some minutes before Israel suddenly got up, “I
have some kind of test today, please take care of
Gabriel. There is enough food in the house, you
can cook something for yourself and him” Israel
told her and she nodded, “That will be my
pleasure” she said. Israel got dressed up and
soon left the house leaving Nkechi with sleeping
Gabriel. As soon as Israel left, she went into the
kitchen and made to prepare something for herself
and Gabriel.


After about thirty minutes of sleeping, Gabriel
woke up. “You are awake” Nkechi who was sitting
beside him on the bed said, “Yes, thank you very
much for everything” he appreciated and she
nodded, “If I don’t do it, who will?” she asked him
and he smiled. “What aroma is that, it is making
me hungry” he told her with a smile, “Don’t worry,
it is all for you” she said as she went into the
kitchen and dished for him a plate of spaghetti,
well garnished. “If Nkechi does not kill me, who
will?” he asked laughing, “I can’t kill you my dear”
she said and they both laughed.


Two days later, a Wednesday of the same week,
Gabriel was still in his lodge, he was still
recovering. He was alone at home this particular
day, he was sure Nkechi will soon come, she
came the day before and she promised she will
come today to see how he was doing. He was
already a bit fine only that he still felt some slight
pains around his body. He was busy with his
phone that morning, he was going through his
department chat group to see if he could beg
anyone for the past two days note but no one was
offering to send them to him. He soon dropped
the phone and headed towards the kitchen to cook
some noodles because he was very hungry. He
was still busy trying to put on the gas cooker
when he heard a knock on the door, “Thank God,
Nkechi is here” He smiled happily as he quickly
put off the gas, she would cook for him. He
walked slowly to the door and gently unlocked it,
it wasn’t Nkechi standing there, it wasn’t Israel, it
was Queen. “What are you doing here?” He asked
trying hard not to shout although he heard an
angry look on his face. She was putting on a blue
gown and she had a school bag on. “Can I come
in?” she asked him, “No, how did you know here?”
He asked her, “Remember I slept here when you
picked me from the party, please let me in” she
begged with a teary eyes.

“No, you can’t come in” Gabriel said still keeping
his strong and angry face. “Please” she begged
with tears almost falling off her eyes, “No, you
can’t come in” he remained adamant. “I beg you”
she said as she slowly went on her knees. The
expression on Gabriel face showed he was
surprised and shocked. “Please get up” he said
with pity and he opened the door wide for her to
come in. She walked in slowly with her hands
folded across her breast. “Sit down” he gave her
a chair, “Thank you” she appreciated as she sat
down on the chair and he also sat on another.


“So, why are you here?” he asked, “To apologize”
she said staring at a book on the table, “See, I
am really sorry, am really sorry for all I made
you pass through and for extorting money from
you” She said and paused a bit to see Gabriel’s
expression. “Please forgive me” she made to
kneel down again, “Can you stop doing that?” he
asked, “Stop kneeling down” he said, “I won’t get
up until you forgive me” Queen said as she
finally knelt down. Gabriel kept quiet for a while
staring at her and she also staring at him. At a
point he almost smiled but tried his best to hide
it. “Okay, get up, I have forgiven you” he said
with a blur smile. She got up slowly and sat on
the chair, “Thank you” She tried not to smile.


“Hey stop hiding it, smile” he laughed and she
laughed back. She deep her hand into her bag
and brought out some naira notes, “Take” she
handed it to him, “What is that?” He asked her.
“The five thousand naira I took from you” She
said looking at the table, trying to avoid his gaze.
“I don’t need it anymore, I have forgiven you, and
I don’t need the money” he said, “why did you do
that? Or better put, why are you this way?” he
asked her, she first stared at him and finally
bursted into tears. “Hey, did I make you cry?” he
asked, she shook her head negatively. “No, you
didn’t make me cry” she said. “I know how I am,
I know I am wayward and I am not happy with
the way I am but that’s was the way I was
brought up” she said, “I grew up without a father,
my father left us because my mother was a
prostitute. I grew up knowing my mom with
different men and I later grew up following her
ways. At a very young age, I started sleeping
with guys for money, I became in love with the
things of the world and I know that kind of life as
the perfect time of life” She cried. “It is okay”
Gabriel consoled, “Don’t tell me it is okay, i am
just twenty years old and at my age, I can’t count
the number of guys I have slept with, I lose
count about a long time ago” She said and
laughed, a pitiful laugh. “I know I am now
useless, very useless than useless” She said.
“Sister, you aren’t useless, all you did was not
your fault, it was the way you were brought up
but nevertheless, you have to do away with those
things” Gabriel said and she nodded slightly, “I
know, I can’t continue living like this” She said, “I
will try my possible best to stop” She added.
“Hope you now believe I didn’t sleep with you?”
Gabriel asked with a kind of angry expression,
“Hey, I know, am really sorry for that day” she
smiled as she got up and walked towards his
side of the table, he shifted back in shock. “Hey,
I am not going to sleep with you, I want to check
out how badly they injured you” she smiled as
she placed her hand on his head and took a long
stare at him, “Am sorry” She said. “It is okay” he
smiled and she walked towards the kitchen,
“What are you doing?” he asked. “You look like
you haven’t eaten, I want to fix up something for
you to eat” She said, “I can’t stop you, I am
damn hungry” he laughed and she laughed too.


It has been a day now since she saw Gabriel and
she can’t just stop smiling, he was a perfect guy,
a cool guy and very funny guy. She was trying to
read her book for the first time in the semester
but she couldn’t, she would occasionally put her
pen in her mouth and look up to the ceiling and
laugh. She remembered the kind of eyes he had
given her when she attempted to feed him
because of his injured hand. She remembered the
sweet words he had said as he tasted her food.
He was a good guy and she was really sorry for
all she had caused him. “Why are you smiling?”
her friends would occasionally ask her but they
got no answer. She finally covered her book and
took her phone to call him, just then his call
came in. “Hello Queen” he said calmly as she
picked the call, “Gabi, how are you?” she asked
smiling, “Am fine, Queen it is Friday, why don’t
we take a stroll round UNIBEN together” he
suggested and she laughed, “Of course, that is
not a bad idea, where should I pick you up?” she
asked laughing, “I am coming to hall two park
now, I will be there in twenty minutes, get
prepared” he said and ended the call.


She dropped the phone and smiled kicking her
leg into the air. “Yes!!!” she shouted and sprang
up, just then her phone rang again. “He is calling
me again” she laughed. She went to pick up the
phone and her expression changed on seeing
who the caller was. She reluctantly picked up the
phone. “Hello John Femi” she said, “Hello Queen
baby, today is Friday, why don’t we have a quick
one tonight, I have a perfect spot for us” John
laughed at the other end.

“John, I don’t think I can do this anymore” queen said with a calm voice. “I know you are joking” john laughed at the other end. “Let us meet at Deuthman club by 10pm, I know you want it, don’t pretend” john continued. “John am serious here, I don’t think I can do this anymore, I am done with such lifestyle. Queen said and immediately put an end to the call. She took a long stare at the phone before finally dropping it on her mini sized bed accompanied by a long hiss. She continued with her dressing in expectation of Gabriel Eugene. “He might not like too much makeup” she thought to herself as she held a stick of lipstick on her left hand, “queen, where you dey go now” her roommate continued to ask her repeatedly but she would let them off with a smile.

Exactly 20 minutes later, her phone rang again, this time it wasn’t john calling, it was Gabriel Eugene. “Queen, I am at hall 2 car park now, will you please come down? I am waiting” Gabriel said as she picked up the call. “Okay I will be right there in a minute” she shouted happily as she dropped her makeup kit, put on her high hill shoe and made for the stairs. As she came out of the big gate securing the hall 2 hostel, she sighted Gabriel standing at the far end of the car park, staring at his phone and at the gate at interval. “I hope I’m not overdressed” she thought to herself as she noticed the simple dressing of Gabriel. She then walked slowly to the side of the car park where Gabriel was standing with his phone, on sighting her, he bursted into laughter.

“Sister we are not going for dinner, we just wan trek round Uniben, why are you putting on a high heel?” he asked as he continued laughing. “Look at you, I plan going to church after now” she lied. “You? You dey go church? Okay which church do you attend?” Gabriel asked still laughing. She took a long stare at him as she tried to think any name of a popular church in Uniben, for as long as she can remember, she has not been to church for the past 3 years.

“Winners ministry” she blotted out with a smile, and Gabriel bursted into another round of laughter. “Where is that located?” he asked still laughing. This smile on her lips faded into a frown, she was angry. “Are we strolling out or you just want to bore me here with questions?” she asked angrily and his laugh just like triggered to do so stopped. “Okay, okay, I am sorry, I just didn’t know that Uniben now has a new church called winners ministry” he said trying hard not to laugh. She took another long stare at him and with a hiss made to walk away. Gabriel immediately caught her hand and turned her facing him. “I’m sorry” he apologized, “I never meant to get you angry, I only wanted us to joke. As for the church issue, you are free to always accompany me to my church every Sunday” he said still staring deep into her eyes, she nodded and covered up her angry face. “So shall we go now?” He asked her smiling, she smiled back and nodded and then together, they left the car park and walked towards the school back gate. They had nowhere in mind, they just be together and enjoy the moment, as they walked, Gabriel’s hand slowly made for hers and they were soon holding each other.

John Femi can be seen sitting in his small sitting room, he was thinking deeply like something was bothering him. “No, Queen might just be joking, she will surely come to the club, she just want to make it a surprise and keep me in suspense” he thought to himself and smiled. He later stood up from his couch and headed towards his bar. He took a bottle of wine from it, he poured himself a little quantity into a glass cup and drank from it slowly. “How will Queen refuse a quick one?” He laughed and took another sip from his cup. “If it is the queen I know, she will be at the club even before me” He said to himself and took yet another sip. He finally drove all the quantity of wine from the cup and took a bunch of key from his table and made for the door. He took one last, long stare at his room and finally went out. He entered his small Toyota car and drove off to God’s knows where.

“So tell me, what is your best colour?” Gabriel asked Queen as they walked towards the education field, one of the big pitch in Uniben. “My best colour is blue, what of you?” She asked him, “Mine is also yours, blue” He smiled and she slightly punched his chest, “For everything I have asked you today, you have been replying me with mine is also yours” She formed a frowned face. “And for all the answers I have given you, I am sincere” Gabriel told her trying to punch her back, “What are you trying to do?” She asked him smiling, “I am not punching you, I want to help you dress you hair” he lied as he placed his hand on her hair, “Better” She smiled. “Okay, where else should we stroll to?” She asked him, “Are you not tired? I am tired o, Let us look for somewhere and eat, I am hungry” he said as he tried looking around for a nearby eatery, “But I am not hungry” She said. “But I am hungry” He said, “And I am sure you are but you are shy to let me know” He smiled, she wanted to defend herself but no words came out and then he bursted into laughter. “Let’s go look for somewhere to eat” He said holding her by her neck and walking with her. Suddenly, a car parked in front of them and out of the car came John Femi. “Queen, what are you doing with him?” He shouted as he came out of the car and pushed Gabriel into the gutter, “John, what is wrong with you?” queen asked and slapped him, “Remember, am not your girlfriend” She reminded.

By now, Gabriel had already gotten up from the gutter and he was staring at them both not knowing what was going on. “Please leave here, I am not interested in my former lifestyle again, I am now a new creature” She told him and he immediately bursted into laughter, “A new creature indeed, don’t worry, when you get tired, you yourself will come back begging me for a quick one.” He laughed harder. “And as for you Mr. Man, it seems like you don’t know who you are falling in love with, she is a prostitute that sleeps about with men for money, don’t worry, you will get the confirmation when she leaves you after you have spent all your money on her” John Femi said and walked back towards his car which he had parked carelessly on the road. He got into it and drove off leaving Gabriel speechless and Queen in tears. “Hey, why are you crying? And who was that?” Gabriel asked her as John’s car went out of sight, “He is right, all he told you about me was right, you don’t deserve someone like me” she told Gabriel as she walked away from him, “And where are you going?” He asked her as she went further away from him, “Forget about me, I am too unclean for you” She told him and ran off through a corner, her tears could be heard as she ran away. “What a bad ending for a good day” Gabriel said to himself as he scratched his head and stood still for a while before walking towards the road that leads to the main gate. Queen ran off to her hostel, she was happy none of her roommates were around that time, what a perfect time to cry. She bursted into tears immediately, uncontrollably tears. Now she realize what Karma really meant, what she had done in the pass is now coming back to hunt her, she loves Gabriel and she doesn’t want to hurt him, he is good guy and she wouldn’t want him to feel pain in anyway, she doesn’t want to hurt him in anyway but her past will surely do. Yes, she has told him about her past but she didn’t go deep into it. No guy will want a girl like her, she doesn’t deserve any guy, she was no good a girl and she herself knows it. She realizes she is already falling in love with him but is he also feeling the same way for her? Even if he is also falling in love with her, when John Femi start to disturb her like he did today, won’t he lose interest in her? Won’t she also drift back to her former way of life once John Femi starts to disturb her? Oh, the only solution to her problems now is God, it is only God that can help her. Gabriel jumped into his bed feeling bad, it was almost an absolute good day for him but one foolish random guy has just come to spoil things for him. He would occasionally sit and lay back to the bed, he was thinking badly, he is already falling for Queen but she thinks he is too good for her, is there still anything Queen is hiding from him? Even if there is, she still loves him. He continued to think and rolling on his bed, he was looking as if he was uncomfortable. John Femi barged into his room and started to pace about like he was looking for something. “So that girl refused my call because of that useless guy” He shouted to himself as he paced around his sitting room. “Maybe she doesn’t knows who I am” She said to himself and laughed. Just then, the door opened and his girlfriend walked in smiling, “Hey love” she greeted smiling, he immediately turned angrily towards her, his eyes were filled with anger and it was as if he was going to bounce on her. “Get out” He shouted and she staggered back in shock, “John what is it? Why should I get out?” She asked him, she was obviously also getting angry. “Get out, and if you need me to tell you officially, it is over between us” He shouted again, she immediately bursted into laughter and sat on a couch, “Tell me you are joking” She laughed, “Oh, you think I am joking bah?” he asked walking towards her, he immediately dragged her up and pushed her towards the door. “Get out!!!!” he shouted and pushed the door opened, “john what are you doing?” She asked him in fear, “Get out!!” he pushed her out finally and locked the door. “Idiot” He cursed and accompanied it with a long hiss. “Queen, if not me, no one else will get you” He said and brought out his phone from his pocket. “Hello Alika, I want you to help me torture a guy that his giving me troubles, don’t kill him, just help me torture him” John said, “Yes Capon, just give us his details” Alika said from the other end, it was then John realized he knows nothing about the guy he wants to torture, he knows nothing about Gabriel, Gabriel Eugene. Gabriel was almost drifting to sleep when his door flung open, it was Nkechi, she was wearing a pink very short, arm less gown. Her fair laps could be visibly seen, if she should just bend a little, we might just get to see her panties. Gabriel wiped his face and sat up slowly on his bed, “Nkechi” he called, “How are you feeling now dear, how is your body now?” She asked him, “I am fine as you can see, fine and strong” He smiled. “Hmm, I can see that” She said and without his consent, pecked him. “Let me prepare something for you to eat” she said and walked towards the kitchen.

It was another week, beginning of a new and stressful week for the students. As usual, Gabriel was in class reading his notes, they were just done with lecturers. As he read, he would sometimes strain his neck in search for Queen but all to no avail. It was like she wasn’t going to come to school that day but he kept his hopes high. They were still to have about three lectures for the day so he had no need to rush, she might still come. She has not called him since the last time they met, as a matter of fact, she had refused to pick up his calls and that had got him very worried. He had called her more than twenty times after the incident that had happened the last time they met but she didn’t pick up and she did not bother to call back. At a point, he had gotten angry and had promised not to call again but he still found himself picking up his phone to call her, LOVE. He continued reading for about thirty minutes before he had urge to look up, something pushed him to look up and when he did, he sighted Queen just coming into the class, she was wearing a white trouser and a blue top, she was looking more beautiful than she normally would be and for the first time, she was holding a note book. Gabriel was sitting on the front sit in the hall, Queen saw him as she came in but pretended like she did not, she even passed where he was sitting but she didn’t even greet. “I hope there is no problem?” He asked himself as she didn’t react to his wave. He couldn’t wait for classes to be over for the day, he really wanted to speak to Queen, she had been avoiding him like there was something wrong with him. The moment the last lecturer left the class, he got up and arranged his things into his bag. He sprang up from his desk and went out of the hall to wait for Queen who was also coming towards the door. “Queen” he called her the moment she came close enough to him. “Gabriel, how are you doing?” She asked and made to walk away but Gabriel blocked her path, “What is wrong, why have you been avoiding me since today?” He asked her but she gave no reply as she made to walk away again, this time Gabriel held her hand. “Queen, why are you doing this?” He asked her with a very calm voice, “Gabriel, i am not a good person for you, you don’t need me, I don’t deserve anyone and moreover, I don’t want to hurt you with my past” She said and freed herself and made to walk away. “Queen are you really walking away?” He asked her, “Gabi, I am sorry” She said and walked away while Gabriel remained staring at her. “Fine then, if you want to leave, you can leave, I will also leave” He said to himself and turned towards the direction of the library. As Queen walked back towards the hostel, tears which she tried to hide could be seen falling off her eyes, she couldn’t control it anymore and she finally broke down under a tree and wept, “Am sorry Gabriel” she said as she cried, “I love you, I really do” She cried on. Gabriel on his side was in the library and obviously should be reading but he was not, he wasn’t reading, he was just staring at the book and thinking, he was lost in his thought and his mind wasn’t in the library any longer, he was with Queen. “Why can’t she just forget about her past, I am not holding it against her, I love her the way she is” He said to himself. “Is that in the book you are reading?” the librarian who was standing just in front of him asked, “No, it’s one of Shakespeare’s line am trying to remember” he lied with a smile and the librarian also smiled, “Trying to remember a Shakespeare’s line with a biochemistry text book” She laughed and walked away. Nkechi came to visit the evening of the same day, she had promised to come visit him that evening, although he had agree to her to come but he didn’t really want it, he was tired of seeing her, it was like his problems started when she came back into his life. As usual she prepared something for him to eat but he didn’t even take a spoon from it, he had told her he wasn’t hungry even before she started cooking but she wouldn’t listen. “Why are you behaving this way?” She asked him while holding his hands but he didn’t reply her, he didn’t even look at her face. “Nkechi” he finally called out and she turned to face him with a smile. “I want you to stop coming here” He told her and she shifted back in shock, “Why?” She asked him, “Nothing, just stop coming so often” he told her and stood up from the bed to the reading table. “Fine, you are seeing another girl right?” She shouted but he gave no reply, “Let me make it known to you, if you are not mine then you are for no one else” She told him and he still didn’t answer her, “We shall see Gabriel Eugene” she shouted and walked out angrily. Gabriel breathed out in relief and stared at his phone, he wanted to pick it up and call Queen but he resisted the temptation. She, Queen laid on the bed thinking why Gabriel had not called her for that day, she was almost tempted to call him but she controlled herself. “Maybe he has forgotten about me” She thought and immediately bursted into silent tears, she slept off in tears. The next day wasn’t as busy as the first, they were to have only two classes for the day and she was waiting for it to be over. She had sighted Gabriel in his normal front sit, he pretended like he had not seen her when she came in, he had ignored her like she ignored him the previous day and she wasn’t loving it. Immediately the last lecturer went out, Gabriel could be seen leaving the class and she immediately ran after him. “Gabriel” She called but he didn’t answer her. “Gabriel don’t do this, please wait” she begged as she continued to run, she soon caught up with him and stood in front of him, “What do you want?” He asked angrily, “Don’t give me that voice, I am sorry” She frowned, “Sorry for yourself” He said, “Gabi, I am really…..” She was cut short by a guy. “Bro that guy over there asked me to call you” the guy said to Gabriel and pointed at a guy who was standing by a car. “Why?” Gabriel asked, “I don’t know” the guy said and bounced away. The young guys lifted him up from the ground and headed towards a cab, Queen followed them, she was holding Gabriel leg and crying. He was placed in a cab and driven off to the University Teaching Hospital. As Nkechi was coming out of the hospital, so also was Alika driving into it. Alika had come to check on his best friend who had been admitted into the hospital for about a week now. He was about rushing into the building when he noticed the young beautiful, crying girl who was coming out of it. Trust him, Alika, he never miss the chance of stopping a girl talk more of a beautiful, crying girl like Nkechi. “Hey, don’t worry, everything will be fine, just hope in God” Alika said as he walked towards her, to him, the only reason she should be crying is because one of her relation is being admitted in the hospital. Nkechi didn’t mind him, she has gotten use to boys stopping her a lot of times on the road. “Talk to me, I can be of help, is it about the hospital bills, I might just be God’s angel sent to help you” Alika told her again and this time she turned to face him. “Fool, I am not mourning anybody” she shouted at him, “Then why should a beautiful girl like you be crying on this good day?” He asked her. “A guy just broke my heart” she said and continued with her cry, this time, more than the first. “Is that why you are crying?” he asked her and she nodded, he smiled. “That is how guys are, heartbreakers” he told her and patted her shoulder, “you shouldn’t be crying, I hate seeing fine girls like you cry, tell me, what do you want to be done to him?” he asked her. “I want him dead” Nkechi said without thinking, “I just wish he dies” She added, “You know, at times wishes come true, especially those made by beautiful girls like you” Alika smiled and for the first time, Nkechi also smiled. “So tell me, what is the name of this guy?” Alika asked, “He is Gabriel, Gabriel Eugene” she told him, Alika smiled and stared at her, it was the same guy his capon wanted dead. “Maybe he is destined to die” Alika thought to himself. Gabriel was discharged from the hospital the next day, Queen was there to help him home, she was always there for him. Nothing much happened to him for the first one week after he was discharged, he continued his love life with Queen, should it be called love life or love play? Come to think of it, Gabriel never asked her out. For the first week after he was discharged, nothing happened, but on one fateful night of the second week, tragedy struck. This particular night, about 8:15pm, Gabriel Eugene could be seen on the lonely road of his street, he had a school bag on and no doubt, he was going for night class. He had made arrangement with Queen for them to meet that night so as to read together, but he had other plans. He walked happily on the street and hummed a catholic hymn as he walked, suddenly, out of nowhere, two hefty men came and blocked his path. The first was with a gun and the second with a knife. There was no one or nothing in sight except a car that looked like an abandoned car which was park by one corner of the street just beside them. The first guy cocked the gun and pointed it at him, “You were warned to stay from her” The first guy reminded, “Please don’t kill me, I promise to leave her alone from now” Gabriel said with vibrating legs, he must have obviously peed on his shorts. “We don’t need your promise, we can help you leave her by just killing you” The guy said, he was about pulling the trigger. Suddenly, from the abandoned car, gunshots were heard and just like the wall of Jericho, the two men fell down. From the abandoned car, five hefty men jumped out and covered his face, he knew he was carried into a car but it was certainly not the abandoned car, the car he was in was very comfortable. He tried shouting for help but something was placed in his mouth which prevented him from shouting, he didn’t know when he slept off, but the next time he opened his eyes, he was in an uncompleted building, he was kneeling and he was face to face with a guy sitting on a big chair, it took him no time to recognize his roommate ISRAEL, the capon of the night crawlers.

“Israel” Gabriel called him, he was still kneeling
and didn’t know what was going on. “What are
you doing here, why did they bring me here?”
Gabriel asked and Israel got up from the chair
he was sitting on. He was looking muscular
than he normally was, his face this time was no
that of the friendly Israel he used to know, this
Israel was looking dangerous. He stretched his
hand towards one of his boys and immediately,
a pack of cigar was passed to him. “Israel?”
Gabriel asked himself in shock, yes, the guy
standing before him was Israel but he wasn’t
behaving like the Israel he knew, his own Israel
doesn’t smoke. “Are you surprised?” Israel
asked him, which was the first time he spoke
to him since he arrived, “Israel, what is going
on?” Gabriel asked confused, he couldn’t place
his hands on what was happening. Israel stood
up and walked around with a devilish smile on
his face, indeed, this was another dimension of
Israel. “Yes, this is who I am” Israel smiled, “I
don’t understand” Gabriel told him, “You don’t
understand what? This is who I am, a cultist”
Israel shouted, “Not just a cultist but the deadly
capon of the night crawlers” Israel said, “He is
Israel, the deadly capon of the deadly night
crawlers” one of the guys shouted, it was
Rabbi.


Gabriel couldn’t believe it, it wasn’t
possible, Israel can’t be a cultist. “Tell me you
are joking” Gabriel smiled so also did Israel,
“No bro, I am not” Israel told him and moved
closer to him. “Let us not waste time here, I
have brought you here because I have seen how
often you have been maltreated by the pipeline
guys, I can’t continue to send my boys to watch
you, we don’t do that, we don’t watch the back
of just a normal person, we only watch our own
backs, the backs of the worthy initiates” Israel
laughed, Yes, it was the same Israel, the same
Israel Gabriel had known right from secondary
school. He had come into the university as a
gentle calm guy, but his love for women had
made him seek to join the Night crawlers, he
joined them because the girl he loved was also
being loved by another guy, Harrison peters, a
prominent member of the Killer guys. So as to
get the girl he wanted, he sought the help of
one of his friends who unknown to him happen
to be a member of the night crawlers. One
thing led to another, and he was initiated, he
became a very good killer, a secret killer who
went with Rabbi on numerous death missions.
After their capon died, the mantle of leadership
was passed on to him, and he got freed from
going on deadly missions. About the girl he
wanted, she was killed during the clash
between the night crawlers and the killer guys,
a clash which claimed the lives of all the
members of the killer guys.


Queen sat patiently in one corner of the big hall
popularly known as basement, she had been
waiting patiently for Gabriel for about an hour
now and she was still ready to wait more. She
had called him about 20 times but he wasn’t
picking even if the phone rang on all occasions,
she knew he was going to ask her out that
night, he had been behaving strangely recently
and as a girl, she knew why, he wanted her. Of
course, she wouldn’t decline if he ask her to be
his girlfriend, as a matter of fact, to her he was
already her boyfriend. She soon started to yawn
and she knew sleep was coming. From the
look on her face, it was obvious she was angry,
he was the one who fixed the meeting and now
he isn’t showing up. She arranged the bench
she was sitting on and laid on it. She only
wanted to have a short rest, but she was soon
seen sleeping deeply.


“Let me cut the long story short, we have
brought you here to initiate you” Israel told
Gabriel who immediately opened his mouth
wide in shock. “Please, don’t initiate me, let me
suffer from the pipeline guys, I don’t want to be
a cultist” Gabriel cried, apart from the fact that
he himself had no interest on being a cultist,
he also remembered his mother’s words the
night before he came to the university, “If you
join any cult group and eventually become a
cultist, you are a dead man and that moment,
you cease to be my son because you are
doomed” his mom had told him. “Shut up”
Israel shouted him down, “You think I can stay
and watch the pipeline guys beat you anyhow or
treat you how they want? No, I can’t. You are
my guy and my guys are not used. As it stands
now, you have no option because no one
comes into the den of the crawlers and goes
out alive or goes out without being an initiate”
Israel told him. “I known you are scared to die
but the bible already told us that God has
giveth unto us, eternal life” Israel told him,


“Ride on pastor” Rabbi shouted from one
corner, Israel smiled. “Gabriel, you are my
friend, I can’t stay and watch you suffer, and
you have no option than to join us” Israel told
him. “Am not your friend, you are evil, I never
…..” Gabriel was saying before he was
interrupted by a slap from one of Israel guys
behind him, “You don’t talk to me anyhow here,
this is my domain, my cabba, my kingdom,
show respect” Israel told him as he cried and
held the back of his head where he had been
slapped. “Israel please, I don’t want to be a
cultist, please don’t do this to me” Gabriel
begged, “Fine, you have another option, die”
Israel told him. “please Israel, please, for the
sake of our friendship” Gabriel begged him,


“There is nothing I can do, it would have been
better you didn’t come here at all” Israel told
him, “I didn’t come here, I was forced here”
Gabriel explained, “Anyhow, so far you are here”
Israel told him with a smile, “Okay then, I prefer
to die” Gabriel said with the belief that his best
friend wouldn’t kill him, only if he knew the kind
of devil his best friend was. “Kill him” Israel
ordered Rabbi, the oldest guy in the group.
Rabbi smiled and brought out his small pistol,
Gabriel didn’t shake, he knew they were just
going to scare him, he knew Israel wouldn’t kill
him. Rabbi walked over to where he was
kneeling and cocked the gun, he then placed it
on his forehead. He could feel the heat from
the gun, he knew it was no more a joke, Israel
had backed him and now he knew they were
going to kill him. “Where there is life there is
hope” Rabbi whispered to him, “I will join,
initiate me” Gabriel immediately shouted and
shifted his head away from the gun’s mouth,
truly, where there is life, there is hope.

Israel turned back to face him with a smile, “I thought you will be more stubborn than this” Israel smiled. “Israel you will surely regret doing this to me” Gabriel cried, there was tears in his eyes. “No, you will enjoy being part of the family” Israel told him, “Initiate him” Israel ordered his guys. Gabriel opened his eyes wide in shock, he thought him agreeing to be part of them is already the initiation, he never knew he still has to go through another process of initiation. “What do you mean they should initiate me?” Gabriel asked Israel, “You have to go through a process of initiation, and you must drink from the blood of a young lamb” Israel told him, “You must drink so that the sheep will be separated from the goats” Rabbi shouted, he was still standing in front of Gabriel, the gun was still in his hand. “I promise you bro, you won’t ever regret being part of us” Israel told him again, Gabriel wiped his tears this time and got up with a smile, “initiate me” he told Israel with a smile, Israel smiled back and nodded his head, “That is the spirit bro” Israel laughed and Gabriel was led to a sacred room in the building.

Queen suddenly staggered up from the bench she was lying on, she was sweating profusely though there was light in the hall she was in and the fans were functioning properly. She obviously had a nightmare. “Jesus Christ” she did the sign of the cross wrongly. “God, please let this not happen, let nothing ever happen to my Gabriel” she prayed silently. She searched for her phone and dialed Gabriel number again, “Switched off” came the reply. For the first time in many years she knelt down and made to pray, the last time she prayed was when she was about 10 years old. As she prayed, tears trickled down her eyes, whatever it was, the dream she had wasn’t just a bad one, it was a very bad one.

“Capon!!!” a guy shouted as he bounced into a hidden building, it was a building in the middle of a forest, it was the headquarters of the pipeline guys. The name pipeline guys came from their abode, the forest in which they resided was first known to be a land filled with pipes for transporting oil to the University, it was until some bad guys started to vandalize the pipeline that the school closed the transport of pipes through the pipeline and then the guys settled down there, they gave themselves the name “pipeline guys” and with time, they evolved and new guys began to join them, they became cultist and they continued ti terrorize the school as the pipeline guys, this time not because they vandalized pipelines. “Why are you shouting like that?” John Femi asked the young man who had come into the building. “We weren’t able to get the boy” The guy said and knelt in front of John Femi. “What do you mean you weren’t able to get the boy, an ordinary boy?” John shouted in anger, just then Alika came out from a room, by the look of things, he had been sleeping. “What is the matter boss?” Alika asked, “Ask this idiot, just to bring me that Gabriel of a guy is now a mission impossible” John told Alika. Alika turned to the young man and gave him some kind of eyes like he needed some explanations. Alika and john had been course mates right from when they were fresher, beds of the same feathers they say flock together, they both wanted to be big boys in the school and so with the help of one of their numerous friends, they were initiated into the confraternity of the pipeline guys. John was a better hit man than Alika and so when the time came for the group to vote in a new capon after the former one died in a firing battle between the night crawlers, John Femi, the eagle eye as he is popularly called was picked. “We were about to bring him when out of nowhere, some members of the night crawlers showed up and took down some of our men, I was only lucky to escape, I think the guy has some sort of connection with the night crawlers” The young man explained, Alika turned to John and their eyes met. No cult group in the university ever wants to cross part with the night crawlers, they were the deadliest cult group in the university, they spare no one, they took vengeance by killing. In the last firing squad they had with the pipeline guys, they killed 7 members of the pipeline guys including their capon while the pipeline guys were unable to bring down even one of their men. The battle ended after the night crawlers killed the capon of the pipeline guys, ever since then, the pipeline guys have always tried to stay away from the path of the night crawlers. “Are you sure of what you are saying?” John Femi asked the guy, “Yes boss, I can’t lie to you” The young man answered. John turned to Alika again, he was speechless and took a deep breath. “What do we do now boss?” Alika asked John, “This time, we face the night crawlers head to head, we are no cowards and we can’t allow the night crawlers to always push us around, this time we face them fire for fire, I can’t allow anyone have my girl, Queen is mine” John said and Alika nodded, Alika knew what it meant to go face to face with the night crawlers, although he had nodded, but inwardly, he was not ready to go face to face with the night crawlers.

It was around 1am of the same day, Queen was still in the hall where she had hoped to meet Gabriel that day, she was still kneeling and praying because of her nightmare. “God, though I don’t know how to pray, but please help Gabriel to survive, protect him, guide him, don’t let him die, don’t let the bad ones get him, if you keep him for me, I promise you to worship you for all my life” She prayed. “Queen” She heard her name as she concluded her prayer, she opened one of her eyes and saw Gabriel standing in front of her, he was looking weak and pale, it was like he had been beaten mercilessly. “Gabriel, what happened?” She asked as she rushed and held Gabriel who look like he was going to fall any minute, he was crying and he also had blood stains in his mouth. “I am a cultist” Gabriel said and fell on the bench.
