Last week’s councillorship primary elelction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State recorded first major casualty as the traditional ruler of Mgbee Community in Orlu LGA, Imo State, HRH Eze Brendan Ibekwe was gruesomely murdered because of the community’s councillorship seat.

Orient Daily learnt that trouble started last two weeks when the issue of who will be the councillor of the community in proposed Imo Council election came up.

According to community sources, the community had long agreed that anytime there would be council elections, one Mr John Ijeoma would represent them due to his contributions to community development and the people of the community were said to have stuck to their decision.



It was further learnt that the agreement became more pronounced when the community sometime in the past appealed to Mr Ijeoma to assist them in providing the sum of three hundred thousand (N300,000) which was needed then to solve some pressing communal issues and that whenver there would be council election, he would be the first to go.



Therefore, in order not to be seen as paying back good with evil the entire community including the slain Eze Ibekwe had thrown their weight behind Mr Ijeoma when the state government announced plans to conduct local government elections.

The community leaders also were said to have pleaded with Ijeoma’s challenger, Emeka Okoronkwo alias Taribo to sheath his sword and wait for the next turn.

But, rather than listen to the counsel of the community leaders, Okoronkwo was said to have vehemently rejected it and was said to have openly threatened to kill the monarch and raze down his house.

“Not only did he threaten Eze Ibekwe, Taribo also went to his wife and boldly told her

that he would make her a widow just because of councillorship seat”, one of the sources told Orient Daily.

It was gathered that when Okoronkwo’s threats became too worrisome the monarch in company of elders of the community decided to go to Orlu Police Area Command to report the matter. Soon after, Mr Okoronkwo was arrested but released immediately the monarch and his team left the police station.
“All these happened on Wednesday 20 June 2018 and by Thursday morning the corpse of the monarch was discovered about a kilometre away from his house”, the source added.
According to village sources, Eze Ibekwe had left his house early in the morning of Thursday on his motorcycle to attend to some issues but not long after his corpse was found lying face down near his bike about a kilometre from his house.

Reports said on close examination bruises were seen on his head while his phone and royal beads were removed.
An elder in the community, Mr Euzebus Anyama expressed shock over the dastard murder of Eze Ibekwe recalling concerted efforts he made to ensure the councillorship problem was resolved amicably.
Orient Daily gathered that the murdered monarch was due to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, USA, this week for a conference with another monarch from Oru, HRH Eze B.E Iheanachor of Aji Community but unfortunately that would not happen again as he has been hurried out of the world by some heartless iindividuals.
When Orient Daily contacted the state police spokesman, Andrew Enwerem, he said he had not received any brief about the death of the monarch, promising to get back to our correspondent immediately he confirms the report from the Orlu DPO, but as of the time of filing this report, he was yet to get back to our reporter.
