Turmoil, as Policemen protest unpaid wages with shootings - Vanguard

Maiduguri—Sporadic gunshots rent the air in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital yesterday as hundreds of mobile policemen deployed to the state to assist the military in the fight against Boko Haram took to the streets protesting non-payment of seven months allowances and promotion.

The shooting caused commotion as motorists and commuters deserted the streets of the capital city to avoid being hit by stray bullets. Consequently, the Presidency, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, yesterday summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over the protest. 

Osinbajo meets IG as policemen protest in Maiduguri - Punch

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday met behind closed doors with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting came shortly after the news broke that some policemen were protesting against non-payment of their allowances in Maiduguri, Borno State.
It was, however, not clear if Idris was summoned over the protest or he decided on his own to brief Osinbajo on the development.

The meeting, which was held inside the Vice-President’s office, came at a time President Muhammadu Buhari was attending the 31st Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Mauritania.

The agenda of the meeting was not made public.

2019: Buhari gets new electoral act for assent - Daily Trust

The National Assembly has transmitted a new version of the amendment made to the 2010 electoral act to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent, Daily Trust has gathered.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, confirmed to Daily Trust that the bill has been transmitted to the President through his office.

The transmission, our correspondent reports, came three months after the president rejected the earlier amendment made citing constitutional matters.
A top management source in the National Assembly told our correspondent that the bill was transmitted to the president on June 25.

Policemen protest as Osinbajo summons IGP - Daily Sun

Mobile policemen in Maiduguri, Borno State, yesterday, staged a protest over non-payment of their allowances. The protesting policemen barricaded the command’s headquarters located on Maiduguri-Kano Expressway.

The protest disrupted traffic on the road.

One of protesting policemen, said they were angry over non-payment of their allowances in the last six months.
“About 10, 000 mobile policemen were deployed to the state from different commands but we have not received our allowances in the past six months.

“We have been serving at the command headquarters since our deployment; but some of us deployed to other locations outside the headquarters were being paid their allowances as and when due. We have been facing hardships as a result of the non-payment of the allowances. We have made several complaints but nobody listened to us,” the aggrieved policeman said.

Plateau: 21 suspects held - The Nation

TWENTY-one suspects have been arrested over the Plateau State killings, according to the special military task force Operation Safe Haven (OPSH).

Among them are those found with arms and suspected hoodlums who hijacked the protests sparked by the killings.

The special task force comprises police, Air Force, Army and paramilitary security agencies.

The suspects were paraded yesterday at the OPSH Headquarters in Jos by the media officer of the task force, Major Adam Umar and Police Public Relations Officer Tyopev Terna.

Major Umar said: “Out of the 21 suspects we arrested so far, 11 of them are those arrested in connection to the killings in Barkin Ladi and environs while 14 of them were arrested from the scene of the civil disturbances after the attacks.

He added: “In our efforts to fish out the criminals carrying out attacks in some villages in the state, particularly in Barkin Ladi, we have been able to arrest some people from the scene of attacks.

“The suspects we are parading were arrested with arms, some of them with locally made guns, revolver and other dangerous weapons which they are not supposed to have as citizens.
