Myths Or Facts: Are Car Fires Work Of The Village People Or Just Carelessness? by AutoReportNG: 7:49pm On Jul 05, 2018
No one ever prayed to see his car(s) razed in a fire, but things like this happen every day. Last week the country was stunned when we witnessed how a petrol tanker razed about 56 cars in Berger axis in Lagos. Just as the elders have a saying, 'Fire is a good servant, but a bad master'.

Many times we have seen cars being razed and there is nothing we can do, we have witnessed scenes like this on 3rd Mainland bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and lots more. Have you asked yourself, what are the causes? Many people are quick to lay the blames to the village people, family issues without knowing most of the faults come from us.

Many car owners have never force once thought of servicing their cars, once they buy fuel, check the radiator and check the oil, they are good to go.

In this article, we will list out the most common 6 causes of car fires.

6 Causes Of Car Fires

In order to avoid this terrible incident, you need to understand the causes of car fires:

Poor Maintenance

Nigerians are quality of these, we don't take things seriously until when its life threatening, from government-owned cars, BRTs to private cars to danfos and molue, the cycle remains the same. Of course, the number one causes of car fires is human error. Many people think that being lazy is not that much of a problem. But if you car owners keep delaying the maintenance schedule, you are unknowingly increasing the risk of a car fire.

Without maintenance, you cannot spot and repair broken parts, seals and wiring and your vehicle will slowly going into the conditions of causing fire. For example, a faulty gasket in the engine will drip fluids, which is amazingly flammable. To prevent this, bring your car to the car mechanics shop immediately.

Accident

Even though it depends on the impact, a car accident can spark and even consider to be one of the causes of a car fire. Many people think that cars are designed to protect the internal very well. However, the sheet metal is not that much of a barrier, so a heavy hit can actually cause spillage and fluid leaks. And it is the perfect condition to start a fire.

Also, we cannot see the car damage in a crashed vehicles to know whether they will cause a fire or not. So we recommend getting away from the accident as fast as possible.

Fuel System Leaks

We now discuss one of the most common causes of vehicle fires: Fuel leaks in the system. There are numerous factors that can cause a fuel leak, which make it very dangerous. Car fluids have flammable and poisonous properties, but it is nowhere near the dangerous of gasoline. Gasoline can catch fire from a simple spark or when reaching the temperature of 45 degrees.

Our recommendation is to make sure your four-wheel vehicle is properly maintained and always check the leak before driving out.

Electrical System Failure

As many car owners, we know car batteries are problematic. In fact, electrical system failure are so troublesome it takes the second place on the common causes of car fires list. The failure in electrical system can produce sparks, ignite the leaked vapors or fluid drop. Since the wiring runs from doors, channels to seats, carpet, it can cause a fire from every spot in your beloved car if there is anything wrong in the system.

One more time, take your car to the car mechanics for schedule check to avoid the electrical system problem.

Electric Vehicle Batteries

Electric vehicle batteries were the problem with car mechanics from a long time ago. Even with the safest car in the world Chevy Volt, the car makers still need to perform many tests of vehicles caught fire during impact. In most of these problems, one of the major causes of car fires is the leaking coolant. It interacts with the damaged batteries, which create sparking and blaze.

This problem is amazingly troublesome since there are always new potential risks with every new design.

Overheat Engine

Last but not least, we come to one of the most common causes of car fires: Overheat engine. An overheated engine that causes a fire to your car might sound impossible, yet it is actually the result of many incidents.

The heat from the engine will make the oil and coolant rise and have a chance to spill out of the areas of circulation. And when this happens, the internal fluids will drizzle and drip throughout the exhaust system, engine bay, and many other hot car parts. And as you all know, they are easily spread and ignite.

Addedum

Village People
While some may argue with this and others call its bluff, we can't but trace some incident to some spiritual instances, for example, how can you explain a situation when a car suddenly ignites fire? A brand new car for that matter? As much as we will love to laugh it off, cases like this are prone in Africa where they see car owners as someone who has reached the pinnacle of success...

Certain vehicles are predisposed to catching fire due to a faulty design.

But largely car fires are man made and due to human errors or omission during maintenance.

Fuel leaks have always been thought of as the major cause of fires, but there are other factors that cause car fires

Oil leaks.

Oil leaks might look harmless, but will cause a fire
with the right ingredients.

Engine oil, transmission oil, brake fluid, grease,..... Are flammable substances, and will ignite when in constant contact with a red hot surface.

Now city driving (low speeds) does not usually generate an appreciable amount of heat on the exhaust system that might get it red hot. but when on a long trip, engine rpms remain on very steady high values and in some cases the catalytic converter in the car has outlived it's usefulness and begins to restrict exhaust flow, making it a perfect cocktail for a car fire.

One cannot rule out village people, but most times they are accused wrongly.

Why did you complicate the write up with the village people addendum?

Did you factor in many factory faults for new cars or devices? Did you also factor in many recalls from manufacturers that discovered that there are mistakes in designing?

Did you forget the issue of Samsung note 7 that catches fire anyhow?

So a brand new car might have a hidden factory fault that can trigger a fire anytime. The manufacturers are also not perfect.

Leave village people out of this, they are not as powerful as the way we ascribe all unexplainable issues to them.

After all the fine points you listed u had to go and spoil your write up with “village people “ ! Because a new car suddenly catches fire means its village people ? It can’t be manufacturer defect ( lots of cars roll out of the factory with faults that were unnoticed and sometimes car manufacturers have to do a recall to fix them ) , it can’t be the driver hit a pothole and parts got detached etc !

in my Book
1,Fuel leak
2 Oil Leak
3 Poor Electrical wiring, by U know who
4 Design fault

If U smell fuel inside your car plz, stop using it and take it to a good mechanic.
Mind what you put in the name of additives into your fuel tanks, some of them might degrade the seals round ur ejectors and joining's of the hose.
If you have bad Oil leaks that you can smell in ur cabin, ie them ones that drop on your exhaust manifold, plz go and fix it.
For the love of God, stop by passing components in your car, any Electrician who offers this service is a devil's messenger.

Village people usually capitalized on human caelesslessness, hence the saying "Those who the gods wants to kill they first make mad". Godliness should make us pay attention to small details.

sometimes we see flashy cars suddenly go up in flames or have a drastic accidents on the road and we tag the owners 'yahoo boys or ritualists' have we bothered to know the history of the cars we bought.

do you know if your car is hunted by the previous owners who might have died in those cars, a whole family might have died in some cars and you think their ghosts will just let you enjoy what killed them or where they died.

now this cars are refurbished and sent to the dump yard Nigeria where the cars will be sold for almost the price of a never accidented or brand new whip.

on this note I tell the Nigerian auto car dealer... please always provide a history of your car and the history should affect the pricing of the vehicle... the new buyer has to know if he can handle the aftermath of buying a hunted vehicle.

and why also everything on sale is call me for pricing... This is Nigeria, many persons be criminal.

Very true sir.

If you intend to purchase a tokunbo or a Nigerian used vehicle, particularly for the Tokunbo, ensure you get a history report.

Get the vehicle VIN or Chassis Number, and forward it to a vehicle history platform.

These checks can be very inexpensive compared to the millions that go into vehicle purchase.

You would be amazed at the kind of damage vehicles imported into Nigeria undergo in the US or Canada, before import.

Most of these vehicles have undergone accident damage, flood or water damage, fire damage, have been vandalized, stolen, and of course, the Nigerian Car dealers favorite pastime, mileage or odometer tampering.

Spend 5 minutes and 1000 - 3000 Naira and save yourself 5 years and hundreds of thousands in vehicle repairs.

Don't just take my word for it: Visit the thread below and see for yourself why it's important to always obtain a vehicle history report.

https://www.nairaland.com/4378034/shocking-transformation-some-crashed-cars

Don't be wowed by external looks.

The vehicles with the best external appearance often hide the worst history.
