The Kwara State College of Aviation, which is a brainchild of Dr. Bukola Saraki is set to take off this year. This is according to Engr. Tunde Yusuf, who is the chairman of the governing council of the college. He made this known on Wednesday (June 9, 2010) )while briefing Dr. Bukola Saraki on the progress of work on the project. Earlier this year the contractors handling the project were given a deadline of June 30th 2010, to complete construction work.

Engr. Tunde Yusuf, who is also the Chief Executive of Bellview Airlines stated that the school will commence operation on Independence Day (October 1) with an initial student population of 20. The aviation school will serve as an alternative to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (Zaria). When operational, the school will train aviation technicians and pilots with a key focus on efficiency and safety. The college will not only address the human resource gaps in the local aviation industry, it will also enhance the efficiency of the Nigerian aviation industry in line with global benchmarks.

Dr. Bukola Saraki signed an MOU for the management of the college with Aviation Training and Consulting Institute of Dubai on June 1, 2008. The foundation laying ceremony took place in January of 2009. The Kwara State government will cover the initial cost of establishing the college, but private investors are expected to take up equity in the project. The Kwara State government is not expected to hold more than 50% equity in the project eventually.

The Kwara State College of Aviation represents part of the long term efforts of Dr. Bukola Saraki to reposition Kwara State. It also addresses the deficiency of human resources in the Nigerian aviation industry, which is dominated by foreigners, especially foreign pilots. Clearly the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (Zaria) is in no way adequate to fill the human resource needs of the Nigerian aviation industry.
