The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it is ready to curb vote buying by politicians during elections.

INEC also admitted that politicians involved in the practice during Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election, “were clever,” about it.

Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu the National Commissioner of INEC and Chair, Legal Services Committee, who spoke to journalists in Benin City on Wednesday, said that the commission was taking drastic measures on vote buying, in order to curb the trend during the next governorship election in Osun State.

“INEC is taking issue of vote buying very seriously. I am just coming as part of the Supervising National Commissioner for Ekiti and these things occur,” Agbamuche-Mbu said.

“We are having another conference on electoral offences. Vote buying is another electoral offence and we are looking at ways to curb it. Politicians keep trying their best. Politicians were clever in Ekiti. They have ingenious ways to sort themselves out. We will go back and review it and see how we can stop vote buying with the best of our ability.”

“Security agencies were not involved in the two local governments I supervised. Security agencies did well in Ekiti. We have to continue to enlighten and educate our electorate. It is to educate our people for them to realize that their votes count and not all about money.”

Agbamuche-Mbu also spoke on the importance of adequate enlightenment and education of the electorate on the dangers of exchanging their votes for cash.

The problem with Nigerian democracy is the people.

Not INEC, not the government, the people.

This Ekiti election was marred by open vote buying...and the painful thing is people willingly and freely partook. No one stopped them, they were not forced under duress to take APC or PDP's money...they willingly took it.

If Nigerians cannot wake up to the fact that vote buying is wrong...then maybe we should dump democractic rule...and go back to autocracy till we know better.

Vote buying has bn part of our Electoral System in Nigeria since 1999...so people pretending that they didn't buy votes are just plain stupid...Has anyone seen APC come out to say that they didn't induce voters with cash in Ekiti? No...But the most corrupt political party in the history of the world, PDP, are claiming innocent of an electoral sin that it introduced into our polity, something a 6 year old is apprised of in Nigeria...I just have never experienced it bn done with such impunity.

The thing is that, both parties did it, but Fayose should look inwards as to why he lost Ekiti...he shot himself in the foot; imposition and calling the bluff of the aggrieved in PDP, plus d non-payment workers salary for close to a year are d main reasons he lost Ekiti...No matter d rigging, it is difficult for a political party to rig successfully where it's not popular...Despite huge cash inducement and military presence, APC still lost in Anambra.

The thing is that this cash inducement thing won't fly in court (not in a Nigerian court anyways) as the two main contenders are guilty of same crime...so the loser should just forget it and move on...while a lesson should be learnt from it and measures put in place to reduce it in subsequent elections (because there is no way u can get rid of it, it's in our DNA).

Just a parting shot to Aregbesola, he had better take care of whatever he owes the Osun State workers, as d same treatment might be waiting patiently for him at d next bend...when u make your civil service suffer, it has ripple effects on the entire masses one way or the other....and it eventually comes back to bite u when u need them.

I really don't understand d kind of electoral commission we have.. Why have every institution taken d style of d govt in complaining and apportioning blames instead of performing their duties and functions

This is no news. Since 1999, politicians have always bought votes. They either pay with cash or with other items like rice, garri, Adire, etc? Some buy the votes directly from the presiding officers at the polling units. This is the nature of ALL elections in Nigeria, from local government to state to presidential elections.

Only fools will believe this deception by Buhari's INEC

The real rigging happened during collation when PDP agents were locked out. Even with the vote buying, APC lost...... INEC is only being smart in half by blaming vote buying.
