I AM LOOKING FOR MY FRIEND
His name is Shina, that’s all I know of his name. This was between 1991-1996
We romp the bushes of Odota Illorin west together; we know all the holes and crevices around there.
We harvested ‘Aki Awusa’, hunted the brown colored rats, and stole guava and sugarcane from the guavas/sugarcane plantations as one. When one of us was caught, the other willing surrenders to face same punishment for stealing. We never fought ourselves to know which of us is stronger; we were such a perfect combo. When we choose sets, we are always on the same set.
We fought our enemies together and wherever he is, I was as well.
When his mother wants to have him punished and had determined the number of strokes she’ll use on him, his sister would quickly come and call me. Even when I’m eating, I’ll abandon my food and rush to save him. His mom is mean and unforgiving, she’ll tell me to either take the strokes for him or allow her to flog him as she had determined to. I’ll say ‘yes I’ll take the stroke for him’ but he wouldn’t allow that, so we’ll share it. If she had decided to flog him 24 strokes which was her favorite number, we’ll share it 12/12. After the twelfth stokes each, we’ll cry and rush to my house and cry till we are over it. What I do for him, he is willing to do for me, just that, when he kneels down to share my strokes of cane from my mother, my mom would forgive me because of his willingness to share whatsoever punishment she had melted for me for being defiance.
I remembered the day my mom locked me inside to cure my greed. I was so attached to food that I’ll never consider my younger ones. My mom decided to cure that greed once and for all and had me locked in, ‘you’ll finish a bag of rice today’ she had threatened. Before me was a pot of rice that I must finish, she had her cane behind me, flogging me each time I stop eating. She had also ordered that more rice be cooked for me until I’ve finished the entire bag. No one could save me day, till Shina sensed I was in trouble and came. He went to the window and knelt down, crying as I cried inside the room where I was locked to eat a big pot of food. Mom couldn’t contain the love Shina had shown, and then she decided to release me. Shina quickly escorted me to the bush, sat with me as I pooped. He kept encouraging pooping, and he never laughed at me. Just sat there using his hands to massage my belly so that I can ‘pupu’.
As we grew up, I continued schooling, Shina couldn’t, he was always caught amongst thieves, and he is always entangled with clandestine activities in Odota
His mom is a widow without the means to send him to school. Shina started ‘Agburo’ work while I was still in primary school.
Our friendship was greatly affected because our lives were heading in opposite directions. He was not getting education and was always on the street either as a ‘bus conductor’ or extorting monies from taxis.
I was losing my friend and I couldn’t help it. When I started making money I went to Odota in search of him. If God hasn’t intervened in his life, he’ll probably be an armed robber, drug addict, or someone damaged by drugs etc. whatsoever he had become I don’t care, I just want to see my Friend. A friend I knew just for 5 years and after about 3 decades of my life, I still haven’t found any like him.
I had never had any friend like him, all my current friends either never had the opportunity to ‘chop cane’ with me and those who did left me to ‘chopped the cane alone’. Shina is that friend that won’t visit me if I am in prison but would join me in that prison.
I dedicate this post to my childhood friend Shina, a friend I am still searching for.
May God make me see you
My real friend.
