The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, has said contrary to the kidnap reports, the gunmen who attacked his vehicle on his way to Kogi State on Thursday wanted to kill him.

He alleged that his attackers were policemen.


Melaye, who briefed journalists in Abuja on Sunday, said he escaped the alleged assassination attempt around Gwagwalada along the Abuja-Lokoja Road on his way to attend a court case in Lokoja, the state capital.

Melaye said he ran into the bush and hid on a tree for 11 hours.

The lawmaker explained that he left Abuja in the early morning of Thursday for Lokoja and observed that a Toyota Sienna car was trailing him. He said the car overtook his car, blocked his way and the occupants started to shoot at his vehicle.

The lawmaker, who defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday, said when the suspected assassins realised that his vehicle was bulletproof, they attempted to burn it.

Melaye said, “When I realised that they wanted to burn my vehicle, I quickly opened the car and ran into the bush. I had to run for my life. It was the grace of God that made me to escape. When I got into the bush, I climbed a tree and stayed there. While on the tree, I saw two of the policemen coming to look for me, but they didn’t know I was on the tree. I was in the bush for 11 hours.

“My brother that was in one of the vehicles didn’t know what happened, so he had to raise the alarm that I was kidnapped. He went to the Gwagwalada police station and reported the matter.”

On the tree for 11 hours. Hmmm. Your driver nko? No police escort? You couldn’t get your phone? The abandoned vehicle, who retrieved it? After 5 hours on the tree you weren’t tired, you still had to wait for 11 hours? They wanted to kill you but when you ran they couldn’t shoot? Or you were faster than the bullets? Who needs tires to set a car ablaze? Besides, are the tires on the vehicle made of metal that they had to go look for tires to burn his car down?

As the attackers dispersed in different directions to scavenge for tyres, Mr Melaye said he feared for his life and made instinctive calculation to jump into the bush and bolt, rather than remained in the car in defiance.

“I jumped into the bush, and I started running,” Mr Melaye said. “They pursued me and I was able to outmanoeuvre them and climb a tree.

Anyone with a pinch of brain should please reason this with me.

It is likely they intercepted (according to Dino) his car by pulling over in front if it.

The assailants then left their car to scavenge for tires to burn down his car after repeated futile effort to force him out of his car.

Now, he said he made a break for it when he saw an opening instead of defiantly staying in his vehicle. The intent of the assailants, going by his account of the incident, was to kill him. Is he then trying to tell us that ALL the assailants left him and went looking for tires to burn down his car? None saw him come out of his car and run and tried to shoot him to kill him?

Lastly, what would have been the best option for escape? Drive right through the barricade or come out and take to your heels?

How did Dino, with all his bulk, manage to outrun them so much so that they weren't even close enough to him to see him climb a tree?

Dino is indeed a very shameless man.
