If Nigeria Doesn’t Realize It’s The Giant Of Africa, Africa Is Doomed, Kenyan Lawyer Says

Patrick Lumumba, director of Kenya School of Laws, says Nigeria must improve its healthcare system to discourage President Muhammadu Buhari from going abroad on medical vacation.

Lumumba said this on Wednesday while speaking at Summit Of The Alternatives (SOTA) in Abuja. The professor spoke to the audience via Skype.

The former director of Kenya’s Anti-Corruption Commission said Nigeria ought to be the political Mecca or Jerusalem to which other Africans come for pilgrimage.

Lumumba said the dearth of leadership in Nigeria “is the missing link in Africa’s greatness”.

“The time has come that we must recognize that what Nigeria does is important to Africa. Nigeria and Nigerian leaders must recognize that Nigeria ought to be the political Mecca or Jerusalem to which we pay pilgrimage or visit to pay homage,” he said.

‘When the Nigerian leader wakes up to this reality, Africa will be great. For you who know that Africa is a continent under siege, this is the time. This is the time for Nigeria to provide leadership in politics. This is the time for the Nigerian President, members of parliament and local leaders to liberate themselves and recognize that politics must be sanitized.

“It is time for Nigeria to know that her GDP must no longer be held down at $500 billion but at $3 trillion GDP economy. It is time for Nigeria to begin the revival of her textile industry. Nigeria must make sure that her oil industry is levelled up so that she does not produce crude oil, export crude oil and import refined products. Nigeria must improve her agriculture.

“This is the time that Nigeria must improve her healthcare (system) so that the president does not sojourn in foreign land on medical vacation. The time is now and if we don’t seize the moment, then we are doomed. Nigeria’s leadership is the missing link in Africa’s greatness.”

Lumumba said the political elites in Nigeria are responsible for the problems in the country.

“Let me say without fear of contradiction that the only thing that continues to hold Nigeria down are the political elites who in my view have to liberate themselves from the politics of ethnicity and recognize that political leadership is a position of trusteeship,” the professor said.

“They ought to recognise that when they lead Nigeria, they are also leading Africa. I want to submit to us that Nigeria occupies such an important position not only in Africa but in the world. On the few occasions that Nigeria has demonstrated leadership, the neighbours have been at peace and at ease.

“Not so long ago, Liberia was in a throes of the civil war and the Nigerian political leadership provided the leadership to ECOWAS. Today, we can talk about a stable or stabilizing Liberia.

“When there was instability in Sierra Leone and Nigeria leaders came out and we can recognize that some sanity has been restored in Freetown.

“At critical moments when the Green (Super) Eagles were soaring as they should, they were the pride of us. Whenever Nigeria has provided leadership, the African continent has always occupied her pride of place.”

It's so depressing when you see all the potential that our country has but our leaders keep hijacking it. It's almost as if someone is pulling their strings, blocking them from practicing decent leadership.

ThIs Is True to a large extent cos we saw this practically in Asia how the Japanese economy was said to be only major developed nation in that region at a particular time and that gave rise to development of other nation close to her as well as the formation of the Asian tigers also referred to as the Asian Dragons ( Honkong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan ), these countries were the first newly industrialized nations...

One common feature among others that brought speedy development to the above listed nations what's the development on human capital ..

Be that as it may, if Nigeria must record speedy development in the years to come the development of human capital must be taken serious above the development of physical or other forms of capital...cos it is the human capital you develop that can drive other forms of capital forward effectively to bring about the needed and necessary development that the nation desires ..

God bless Nigeria

Wow, what a nice piece. Thank you sir. I sincerely hope we can get it right. Only one section of our economy is active (even tho not at 100%) and we are already the largest economy in Africa. Imagine what would happen when we recover other sections of our economy.

I've listened to the speech of Patrick Lumumba before. He speaks eloquently, intelligently and above all, passionately about the development of Africa. Too bad, the advice will not be yielded as the elites don't care.

I hate to disappoint Patrick Lumumba but if Africa has to depend on Nigeria to realize her greatness then the continent is indeed doomed.

For the good of the unfortunate denizens trapped in this colonial prison camp, the synthetic contraption masquerading as a nation has to fail and ultimately dissolve.

Too many lives have been lost in the forlorn hope that this country will one day turn the corner. It’s time to give up this pipe dream and face the stark reality. This country was never designed to work as a nation. It was only cobbled together as a vehicle for exploitation and theft. When we say the leaders are thieves, they’re only using the country for its original purpose.

On my own part I am hoping that Mumuharri wins the election next year so that he can continue the stellar job he is doing (destroying this shytehole) because it’s apparent that the colomental people in this country won’t go their separate ways if they’re not forced by hard circumstances to do so.

With people like this, Nigeria will never realize it's potentials even in a million years time!!
Don't be so heartless as to sell your soul just because of a morsel.
I will leave you with this message, even the worst tyrants in history had supporters. Men like Hitler, Idi Amin, Abacha etc all had sycophants who kept saying they are the best thing to happen to their respective countries even when reality says otherwise. Just because of their own selfish interests, these sycophants one way or the other contributed to mass suffering because they chose the part of ignominy rather than being just.
I hope you won't be among those that will end up on the wrong side of history.
Retrace your steps now and stop supporting evil.

When Nigeria was in recession, it affected Republic of Benin.

Nigeria is really the heart beat of Africa.
Benin is just one out of so many African countries. Nigeria is grossly underperforming. Did you even know that Nigeria alone constitutes about half of the total population of West Africa??
Did you even know that Nigeria is the most resource rich country in West Africa??
Did you even know that Nigeria(South) has about the best human resources in Africa??
Then ask yourself why are we still lagging behind??
Ask yourself why we have become a laughing stock in the world??
Ask yourself why we can't seem to get anything right??
If you truly search your soul then you will realize that the problem that is causing all these is tribalism which also caused other problems like lack of patriotism to the country and corruption.
The solution to our multifaceted problems that have beleaguered us is to have a loose federation where all constituent parts will be able to develop at their own pace without being bogged down by bureaucratic bottlenecks from Abuja.
There will be serious competition among constituent parts of Nigeria and each part will easily hold their leaders to account and the multiplier effect will certainly double our GDP/PPP within a short while and we will truly be on the part to greatness.
However, if the status quo remains, we will continue to drag not just ourselves down but the rest of Africa as well.
Madness is defined as repeating the same process over and over again while expecting different result. If we can't restructure Nigeria for effective growth then the only alternative left will be to breakup.
The North is taking the South and Middle belt on a ride because they know we are not serious in our demand for restructuring. Let's have a consensus to tell them that it is either we have a restructured Nigeria or we go our separate ways.

The only problems of Nigeria and Africa as a whole is RELIGION AND TRIBALISM.

Take away these two things and see Africa becoming great.
